The adhesion promoter is the way to go on the plastic parts. Weather you use the metal cast base is up to what you want the color to look like. I havn't used the base coat yet but i do use metal cast often. I like the candy look you get out of it and it goes on very well. I used the blue and purple metal cast on a helmet I painted for my buddy. I went over a white base coat and you can see how it came out. So I guess to actually answer the question....
1. adhesion promotor
2. base color (white, Silver, Metalcast base, Whatever)
3. Metal cast
4. Clear

I used the adhesion promoter and the purple duplicolour on my interior parts. Didn't use the base coat either.

I actually never finished the process because the color didn't turn out like the top of the can. It was way, way too pink and didn't match the plum crazy purple.

I never figured out if it was a problem with the paint itself, or if more coats of color would have solved it.

But, when I was doing this, when I saw the color was not right, I stopped right then before putting any clearcoat. Because no matter what the color problem was, I would have had to take it off to either add more color or sand it back down to nothing.

I had bought DA1692 because that was the only clearcoat the store had in stock at the time. But I never used it, so I can't tell you if it was good or bad.

I owe some pics back to this thread to show how the color turned out. At our last Meet & Greet I took quite a bit of grief for having one unpainted flat black strut cover and one overly pink painted strut cover. That shamed me into just buying another black one. I figured it was cheaper and faster than getting the actual Plum Crazy purple paint and doing it the right way.

 

Sorry to hear your color problem. I have tried the base coat/color coat on a metal item and found that multiple applications of the color coat were needed to get to the plum purple of the cap. I will still try your plan on some plastic parts in a month or so (need to work outdoors and it is still too cold here). I will post results than.

Good to know that maybe the problem was located between the paint can and the part. Now that I have a spare cap, I'll add a few more coats to my test cap. Once it warms up in Michigan, probably in August.

 

Just a quick note on this painting process. I just did 5 pieces of plastic of various base colors. I worked out doors following the temp limits duplicolor specified.

The adhesion promoter goes a long way. You will probable need only a third as much compared to the ground coat or the color coat.

The color coat takes patience and bright light as it semi transparent and can go on unevenly.

The darn clear coat DS125 only comes in small cans (as far as I can tell) and they don't go far enough.

One piece ran some on the color coat but no big deal as I have 10 more to go whenever we get another warm and dry and still day. I will reprep it in about a week or two. Well time to apply another clear coat.

ps I hear duplicolor T125 is essentially the same as DS125 but in a bigger can. I will try some of that when I use up the last can of DS125

 

The photo shows the metalcast paint job on a GL500I pannier door/cover. The can caps are on the right for comparison. Two of the purple caps (of varying shades of purple) and a white cap. Photo taken in bright sun. A lesson learned, if you need to hold the paint can horizontal be sure to wipe the nozzle/can lip frequently to avoid a drip to your surface.
