Chrysler-Nissan marriage on deck?

Funny, I had speculated about this before:

Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Nissan Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC, the third-largest Japanese and U.S. automakers, may share technology to develop new cars and trucks, according to people with knowledge of the companies' discussions.

The talks focus on pickups, small cars and engines, said the people, who don't want to be named because the negotiations are private. Nissan wants to tap Chrysler's expertise with large trucks, while Chrysler, acquired five months ago by buyout firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, seeks access to Nissan's small cars.

A deal may help both companies save money as Chrysler battles two years of losses and Nissan confronts a 16 percent decline in its stock price this year. It would add to a growing list of partnerships aimed at expanding product lineups and keeping assembly plants running with minimal investment.

Oh man, I hope nothing but good things coming from this. Like new gears, 6.4L and a bunch of other goodys for the charger.

Peter DeLorenzo wrote again this week about Chrysler and Cerebus.

I don't think a marriage between Chrysler and Nissan makes sense, don't think anybody should take on Nissan. Their quality is bad and getting worse, styling leads a lot to be desired, and are no longer producing a desired main stream car.

Wow, that would be awesome! The G37 actually beat the BMW 335i in some of the comparison tests, and the new GT-R is one of the most hotly anticipated cars in years! Nissan makes some awesome cars, and they've got some incredible engineers.

The VQ series V6 engines are the most powerful N/A V6 engines out there, how about a Dodge Avenger R/T with a 330HP 3.7L V6 instead of the POS 235HP 3.5L V6 it has now? Or a Charger SXT with that same 330HP, just 10HP less than the 5.7L Hemi? What about sharing some of that AWD technology, certainly not the hardware itself but the concepts might be applicable to Chrysler AWD, think SRT-4 and SRT-6 AWD cars... AND Nissan has been developing their own hybrid system, after licensing the Toyota technology for a while... man the possibilities are endless!

Wow -- I am really impressed by the responses. I expected to see very negative (no mopar ricer) type comments.

That was my original thought, but you are right, their transmissions are awesome!

I could see a lot of benefits. One of the things I like about Nissan is that they understand that product and engines are critical.

add me to the negative.

after owning a few nissans, never again.
between the crappy manual trannies, and gutless feeling motors (minus the v8 in the Titan, it is peppy), and the stupidly designed setup they used on their truck brakes and suspension.

i hope nothing comes of this.

I don't know about the trannies, but what the heck are you talking about gutless motors?

2.5L I4 = 200HP
3.5L V6 = 306HP
3.7L V6 = 330HP
5.6L V8 = 317HP

Seems like the V8 is the only one that's not better than the best Mopar motor of similar displacement, in horsepower per liter. That I4 or any of those V6's would take any Mopar product to a new level of performance, imagine a Caliber R/T or Avenger SE with 200HP instead of 172HP, or like I already said, the Avenger R/T or Charger SXT with 330HP instead of 235 or 250HP!

Actually, the name has already been chosen

I think this would help our sedans so much....

I think its a good idea, I mean they could squeeze like 450 hp from our 5.7 and 525 from our 6.1 and like 600 from our 392 :knockout:

My Girlfriend will like this as she is a Nissan fan. Of course, I'll tell her that a Nissan Charger is in her future!

They're coming to the right place to learn about truck technology.

I don't understand what Chrysler stands to gain from this "marriage." I suppose it could help their new Phoenix V6's due out in a couple years... but the transmissions?

Chrysler has already broke ground on their new transmission plant, and the new transmissions should be much better than what's in our cars now.

numbers on paper arent everything, Nissan motors are good for not making alot down low, but have to get to like 8k rpms to get their numbers.
when you drive it and it feels gutless, thats what i am talking about.

sorry, nothing they have or could offer impresses me (sans the Skyline, but for that price i could get something nice/better).

They feel and tend to have more Torqu (oops spelling) than hondas. I have not driven an 06 and 07 models but I have been riding in their products since the 1979 datsun 5- 10 and they always have better than average performance.
I would put my old 94 sentra xe up against any civic of that year.

next to mopars my favorite brand. But honestly from a performance stand point I think Mopars are in a good position. I think chrysler dropped the ball on the Caliber , Avenger and sebring. I mean you can see the gas tank hanging from under the rear bumper that makes the cars look dated like late 80's to 90's styling. The Avenger is nice looking but for the price range it could be better.
We need a true Compact car and an ultra Compact car to compete with the

scion 's, elements, and other small cars that the other car makers are making. I personally dont care for cars that small, but people are buying up these things like candy. I have also notice many elderly people are buying ultra compacts for gas mpg and money savings. We need to take a large bite out of the japanese and Korean small car market. i think after market support will be key for the compact scene. The toyota scions were some ugly cars to me when they first came out. But they had lots of options that could be added by the dealer. They were marketed hear in FL like many options could be added at the dealer after purchase and sell very well at least here in central fl. Dodge should duplicate this. Heck they could even store the after market parts in the factories and mail directly to dealers as needed to cut down on inventory and over head for dealers.

There transmissions are the most expensive trans on the market to rebuild !! what are you talking about yes they shift quick out of the hole but I hate there trans and yes I personaly have rebuilt them They suck ! They do build a hell of a v6 however !

Chrysler needs help building small, high MPG cars or they will be in long-term trouble. The Caliber is a disaster compared to the Neon.

The Neon was a great car that they needed to increase the quality on, not the design so much.

Yup, and it was a good deal for them.

PS What's up with the nuclear cooling tower in the background?

wonder what this will do to our current relationships with mitsu and hyundai. We've been partnered with mitsu since the mid 80's and hyundai since around 02.

Chrysler and Nissan sitting in a tree, r - e - v - v- i -n -g,
first comes oil, then comes undercarriage,
then comes a scion in the baby carriage.

Sorry i'm trying to think of what a pimped out nissan versa with a 5.7 would be like
