Wheels - 9” vs. 9.5” ?

My SP has the standard 9” wheels and I understand these will accommodate 275/40ZR20 tires which I‘d probably get when the time comes.

Is it worth spending about $1,000 for a set of 9.5” wheels? Is the car going to handle better because the wheel offset positions them a bit further out? Will the car ride better because the sidewalls might flex a bit differently?

I don’t have an issue with the way the SP wheels look & wouldn't spend the money just for looks. But I might if it optimizes the fitment of the 275 series tires for better all around performance.

From reading other threads It appears the 275 tires on the stock 9" wheels come real close to front suspension parts due to the wheel offset. I don't know if this would actually become a problem depending on tire brand or tread width.

Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

I was just down this road. I also had Stock 9 inch wheels on my Scat Pack 2020 model year. I like the Stock wheels but actually like the 9.5 Dynamics Package / 392 Daytona wheels a bit more. I scored a deal on a damn near brand new set.
I purchased 275/40ZR20 tires all around in the Continental DWS06 Plus Ultra High Performance All Season tires.

I can tell you from first hand experience this changes the way the car handles. The car feels way more planted and more safe to drive. The 245/40ZR20 Goodyear RSA2 tires in my opinion have no business being on this car. It felt reckless and unsafe. The car can over power them to easily, sure some think it's fun to do burnouts but I'm not interested in wasting time and money smoking my tires away.

Traction isn't as much as an issue as even from a dead stop, I have more traction earlier. The DWS06's with the 9.5 in ch wider wheels grip at 40 mph, I can hook and go whereas with the 245's they just spun.

I like the square setup to keep the car balanced. With really good tires and the wider wheels, it's a whole new experience. I don't however feel like I wasted my money as suggested above. I also don't plan on street racing as I kept my factory wheels and tires and as soon as the Drag Radials are available, I'll be putting a set on the factory 9 inch wheels in also a 275/40ZR20 size. This is for the 1/4 mile drag strip.

You will have no difference in traction between a 9" and 9.5" wheel if you're running 275/40/20 tires. It's a waste of money unless, like P69 said you're going to 10.5s in the rear to run 305 or 315 tires.

I will also add I ran 275s all around for a few years on my stock 20x9 Super Bee wheels and there are 0 fitment issues, they fit just fine. Since running my 9.5s up front with the 275s I've actually caught the fender twice now on potholes.

In your case if you're running a 275 there won't be very much of a noticeable difference. There is of course a slight performance advantage to having a wider wheel even with the same tire.... If you put a 20x9 wheel with the same 245/45/20 tire on an R/T that normally has a 20x8 it will positively affect the performance and feel. This is what they do on the Daytona 5.7 cars and of course on the Performance Handling group that comes with the 4 pot Brembos (also applies to the V6 GTs with that package).

Yes is is minor but it changes the contact patch a bit even with the same 245/45/20 Goodyear RSA-2 on there. In your case from 9 to 9.5 the improvement in measurable performance or seat of the pants feel would probably be hard to detect.

I ran BFG g-Force Sport Comp 2 summer tires on a 20x9 on my 2006... they had a very stiff sidewall compared to the OEM Goodyears on the 20x8 on my stock 2019 R/T. These Goodyears definitely roll over more on the sidewall... hard to tell how much of that is attributable to the narrower 20x8 or the softer Goodyear sidewall.

Interesting.
My experience going from a 9 to a 9.5 inch wheel , I can't tell as I also changed the tires. I also changed the width of the tires from a 245 to a 275 but the height is the same as the 245's are 45's and the 275's are 40's. now with changing the wheels and tires made a huge difference on how my car now rides , feels , handles and the amount of usable traction I now have. I can't take this setup to the Track and expect the best ET's the car can run as I can still spin them at low speeds but not as much as the 245's , not even close. I have traction where I did not before. I have a software but better handling ride. The Contentials ride much softer on the road, they changed the way it feels going over bumps and even just cracks in the road. They take turns at speeds I feel the Goodyears would have given up. Maybe I gave up on the Goodyears early in certain on and off ramps but I didn't feel safe with those tires underneath my car.
I'm sure they are a lot better on the R/T and GT packages. Both of those trim levels have less power and probably way more fun on the Good Year RSA-2's. They where decent in the rain and did handle nicely but they don't compare to the DWS06 Plus tires I have now.

So going from a 9 inch wheel to a 9.5 inch wheel I have no idea IF that made any difference in the overall driving experience. But I know for a fact the tires did. I'm not going to take these wheels off, mount the DWS06's on each set of wheels and test this, I'd like to but I don't want to tire shop to have the ability to scratch either pair of wheels. If I had the extra money, I would buy another set of the DWS06's and mount them on the 9 inch wheels and then swap back and forth and see if it felt any different. Not scientific but who in here is a Scientist? I'm a hobbyist just loving my car, hanging out with you guys and learning more about these wonderful cars.
