Power Steering Pump and Oil Cooler

Two questions.

First: I was checking out all the accessories on the FRONT of the engine on my 5.7 R/T and could identify the alternator, the AC compressor, water pump, idlers and tensioner... (lol) but could not see any power steering pump! It must have one. Soooo.... where is it?

Second: does a regular plain jane non-fleet , non-severe duty 5.7 Hemi have an oil cooler?

Im pretty sure the power steering on the 11-12 Chargers is electric. Therefore isn't a part of the accessory belt route. "A rack-and-pinion power steering gear directs the front wheels. What's unusual about the system is that instead of a conventional hydraulic pump driven off the crankshaft, the Charger's steering uses an electric pump. The electric pump increases fuel economy by 0.3 percent and adds three horsepower to the bottom line."

As far as I know, there is no oil cooler on the 5.7L R/T.

2012ChargerSTP is correct.

What you have on the 2011 and up is the electohydraulic power steering system. It takes a completely different fluid than what the 2010 and below has. We recently finished our upgrade for the 2011 and up cars with this special fluid. The reservoir is on the steering rack itself.

Different MS spec then the MS-9602 like the older cars. ;)

I too was wondering about the power steering. Okay I understand it is not belt driven, but how are you supposed to gauge whether or not your fluid is getting low?

I'm used to the old reservoir style where you pull the stork and look for ADD, vs. OKAY, etc. What gives on these cars?

They make it REALLY HARD to check anything on the system.

Here is the system:

The system componentry consists of the following:

• Steering Column

• Rack and Pinion Steering Gear

• Electro Hydraulic Power Steering Pump (EHPS)

• Return and Pressure Hoses

• and a Reservoir integrated with EHPS pump

There is only 16 oz in the entire system!

Frankly, we just replace the whole amount with a much better material that produces a greater steering response while significantly increasing the rack life. When the system binds, the electric control unit burns out and it is over a grand to replace!

Best $29.95 you ever spent.

If you need more info on it, just email us! ;)

Electrohydraulic. Hmm... and how is this unit controlled, please? I've been looking for some sort of power steering system that uses an electric pump for a hydraulic system for a project I've been planning.

I'd thought that the Charger used a direct electric assist, as in an electric motor is connected directly to the steering shaft on an otherwise manual steering system, not an electric pump driving fluid.
