A guy I work with has a Neon SRT4.
Claims to have 300hp and it's much lighter than a Charger.
I'd hate to think I could get whooped by a 4 cyl Neon.

Yep SRT-4 is faster. I actually traded my 04 SRT-4 for my Daytona.

Dude, if you have a 3.5 Liter V-6, you shouldn't even be talking to this guy about racing him. Those little skittles are no joke.

Hmmm, 300hp, sounds about like a Stage 3 kit, if so, that can give an SRT-8 a run for its money, so yeah, if he's being truthful, he's right, it would kill you, or a 5.7.

Ask him whats he's got done to it. Even stock, its a straight match for a Hemi car, but lots of SRT-4 owners use ricer math, sadly, thinking that mods add like normal.

CAI + 5hp
Catback exhuast + 10hp
Cat delete + 10

And they think they have 255whp. And someone told them that 18psi means 300hp, so thats the number they use. Once they start with boost controllers, and other stuff, hard to say, its just as easy to add bost but not power.

If he stayed with Mopar Stage kits, its easy, they make a set amount of power, no tuning required. And the Neon SRT weighs about 3100lbs, so yep, its lighter.

Stock power is about 230whp, about 50whp shy of a Hemi, but each 100lbs is worth 10 hp, so thats about a 100whp bump. But then subtract for FWD traction problems, and they end up about even.

My buddy has a stage 2, stock tires and rims and just ecutouts and I smoke him all the time. Maybe hes not drivin it like he should but its never a contest. He gets me on the start by a car and a half but as soon as I get into 3rd, its see ya!!! he has alot of wheel spin in every gear so maybe thats why..... He has been driving for 5 more years than me too... He hates me after he looses!

Yea If he is being honest do not doubt for a second that he is making 300bhp. rj.lo on the other forums is making about 522rwhp in his little skittle...

don't underestimate our cars :). i am right at 300whp MAYBE A LIL UNDER and check my sig for my quarter times. i can beat srt-8's. i am still on the stock turbo as well (more than likely he is as well). our cars weigh under 3000 maybe 3100 with the driver in it. with just minor bolt ons wastegate, exhaust, fmic we can easily run a low to mid 13 depending on the driver. i own a srt-4 and i know A LOT about them. if u have any questions ask.

I could see that Neon getting off the line faster but I cant see it keeping up with the Charger once both cars have wound out to the last gear.

I don't know anything about the SRT-4 so I cant really say either way.

The only Neon I have ever driven was one of the original Plymouth Neons from the late 90's. The fun is over once you shift out of 2nd gear.

Nah, top end stock is about 148-150, so your gonna need a Daytona or Road and Track car to keep up there. One thing about them is that they make more torque than horespower. while the stock power is 230, the stock torque is I think 250.

Pete, I just saw your sig answered my question. I do ask, though, the stree tires you ran that on, were they DRs, or normal street tires?

if he has knock detonation the car will pull timing as well it is all in the tune on how good these cars run.

but you are right toys can make a difference if he has race gas or water/meth inj. he can run high octane mode.

boost leak kills these cars it could be soooo minor but yet make the biggest difference.

agp makes sct flashes that u tell them your mods and they give u a tune and from what i hear it is pretty accurate. but yeah u are right about mopar makes kits u don't have to tune them but u won't get NEARLY as much horse power from going aftermarket. if u have stg3 with toys with minor bolt ons u will be lucky to get 400 to the wheels without upgrading the stg3 to a bigger wheel. if u get a 3076r or a dbb 50trim or something big u can easily get 400+ to the wheels with the proper bolt ons.

so basically mopar has less power with no tuning

aftermarket has tuning required but a lot of power (this is definately the route i will go and i am going this route :)).

it is very easy to tune the car i can do one pull at the track and have my car tuned. it is very easy because i have a base map that i use and with the tuning device that i have safcII it is very easy to adjust the air/fuel. when i go even bigger than i am right now like fidanza cam gears and cams then yes i will have to pay someone to tune it on a dyno but after that one time i can tune my car from there.

maybe i should tell him you set up so he enjoys the car more....no...wait...then he will beat me!! bad idea!!! hahah sounds like u have a sick SRT4, they are fun to drive.. keep up the mods!!

Heh, I had a friend with an 05 ACR Stage 3 with toys, and all these extra trinkets to get over 23psi+...he was always getting CEL but it sure was freaking fast. He took me for a ride, and hit it...you can tell how fast a car is if you blink and its at 10mph and then when you open your eyes its at 60mph. This car is extremely fast, and I'm no pro...definately a noob..but I doubt my R/T can take it

I bought my Super Bee after I got T-boned in my SRT-4 last May. I decided I wanted something bigger and with side-curtain airbags for me and my family, especially my 2-year-old twins.

Having owned both the top of the line Charger and the SRT-4 within the last year, I can honestly say that the SRT-4 Neon is the BEST car I have ever owned from a driving enjoyment standpoint. I love the Bee, and my family loves all the extras (heated seats, DVD, dual zone AC, etc) the Neon didn't have, but the SRT-4 was more fun to drive.

Not only that, but the SRT-4 was half the price of the Bee when both were new. You can buy a nice used SRT-4 now for about $10K, and with 3K worth of mods you can eat ANY stock SRT-8 vehicle. The SRT-4 is defintiely more bang for the buck than any SRT-8.

i will trade cars with u if u want i have a lot of money in my car and u can easily run high 10's low 11's with a bigger turbo :). i would take the superbee or a srt-8 any day over my lil neon. i would rather have my neon over an r/t tho.

#28 ·
our cars run A LOT better in the cold btw the only thing the hot weather does is make our cars stick better to the ground :). srt-4's and srt-8's would have great races obviously if the neon has a decent amount of modifications. a fully bolt on r/t would have a good chance against a minor bolt on srt-4. srt-4's run 13.8-14.4ish completely stock depending on the driver (but there aren't many stock srt-4's left i only ran into a few and i know a lot). :).

the new calibers i do not like at all think they look like a mini suv haha. but with minor bolt ons and some slicks ive seen one run a 12 sec pass with just slicks, exhaust, water/meth, upping the boost, and cai.

#34 ·
you're right about what someone is looking for.. not everyone is about speed. i would rather have my charger then own some 15 grand neon with all this power and try to kill everyone at each stop light with a big fart can on the back... thats not for me. i didn't buy my car thinking it was the fastest either, if i wanted more power i would have spent an extra 8-10 grand and got the SRT which i could have afforded but was happy with a 5.7 with 300 plus hp

#36 ·
Now 07, dont stereotype:) My neon had all that power, but I wasnt trying to kill everyone from a stoplight, no more than in the Charger, and the SRT-4 crowd is more focussed on performance than you might think. They generally eschew fart can type exhuasts in favor of making power.

I loved my SRT-4, but with my knees getting worse, and the family feeling cramped, it was time to move up. Only way to stay as fast was to get the SRT-8, anything else would have had me feeling the power loss.

But for 75K in three years, that car was a joy to own. I bought mopar stuff, bolted it on, it went faster, no fuss, no muss. Never let me down.

it has different suspension than a regular neon. the only thing the same with the neon and the srt-4 is the body. u can't really compare the two cars. it is like comparing a charger sxt to a charger srt-8 or superbee u just can't compare them.

A few years back (when I was in my early 20's) I'd be all over the Neon SRT4...but with starting a family and all, I had to go with the bigger car.

That said, I've seen plenty of SRT4's that will clean an R/T and an SRT8's clock. Don't underestimate those skittles...

Sorry i havent had time to read some of the above yet so if this has been said by others sorry for the repeat.

I had a 96 neon, all nitrous, bolts on, weight modded and nitrous. 12.9 quarter 106 mph
I then built up a 01 neon r/t , turbostage 2, nitous, roll cage, no weight mods, all available bolt ons, motor built other than cam. 13.4 104 mph.
Obviosly i love the neons.

Normal srt-4 run low 14's high 13's stock, as we know so do our 5.7's, except just a hair slower. Neons will take off the line faster, chargers will easily catch up and when the neons get around 145 (r/t) 126 (se, es) the charger if programmed will obviously fly by due to governors. It hard around the 135 range to go much faster but i had spoilers on both my ol girls so that could have easily been the issue there.

I love both cars, although i technically never had an srt-4 i've probably built over 200 of them. I'm the local "neon " guy, you cant say neon without someone bringing up my name which i love. Neon nick as i'm known. Srt-4 with min. boltons can beat a 5.7. But in the long run who cares. As long as dodges are fast and they beat the cobalt, mustangs, cameros, redlines they compete against i'm happy either way

that charger srt-8 must be really fast (i know it is supercharged) because that srt-4 is VERY QUICK i know this for a fact. he is popular on srtforums.com and his car is quick as hell. he has a huge turbo with all the supporting mods (u can tell that his turbo lags a little bit tho being so big haha takes a lil bit to spool up).
