Does a wider exhaust pipe make it louder/throaty'er?

So what would be the difference between my stock exhaust pipes (excluding mufflers, tips, gutted cats, reso's etc etc etc, JUST THE PIPES) and pipes I would buy from blastin bob or somewhere else? Is it how wide the pipes are that make them better? or the double walled pipes or what?

Also, I have a 2.7L SE... if i got an Se+, R/T or SRT exhaust system from a member who got aftermarket and is getting rid of their stock exhaust, would i gain from having one of their systems or would it not fit or fit but not be compatible meaning it would actually ruin my sound or make it sound buzzy/ricey?

The width of the pipe is responsible for it's scavenging characteristics. Two fat and it wont heat up enough to help the fumes flow. Don't put and RT or and SRT pipe on your car. I'm not sure what the exact diameter would be for the 2.7 but I'm sure someone will chime in with that info.

hes right on that one.. diamater too big and the the gasses would not build compression and look for an escape.. ( the tail end) it would just sit there and waite for the heads to push the air out....

so that would result in a crappy sound? and/or be dangerous?

I'm not sure what it would sound like because nobody ever does it.

Are you planning on running any muffler at all?

2 flowmaster super 44's with 2ft long / 3.5" tips, no resos

Hm.....................to be honest? I really have no idea if the extra fat pipe will make the sound more muffled or canny.

It WILL reduce horsepower though, if you're concerned with that.

Are you getting free pipes from a friend or something?

no, but wanted to know if it would sound better or not so i could start looking for someone who was giving one away or selling inexpensively.

Btw.. anyone pm me if u are :)

So since i have a 2.7.. idk what size pipes i have now but obviously an r/t or srt has bigger ones.. which one if anyone knows would be better for me or at all?

I'm in Fort Lauderdale and am getting all new pipes next weekend. You can HAVE mine if you will be in this area to pick them up.

this coming weekend? how many pieces is it?

I would say that you shouldn't go wider than 2.25" diameter pipes.

why? what are the reasons? im just tryin to learn

i know ill never sound like a hemi but i also dont wanna sound like a ricey honda zoomin down the road so i want a decent sound that at least tells the guy next to me im not some ricer but in a bamf dodge charger :rocker:

just go with an after market brand like fowmasters or jba, borola etc... they make exhausts for YOUR type of engine... play safe.. wrong exhaust creates wrong back pressure hence bad performance and possible engine damage... definatly not worth it..... get an after market for you CAR.. play safe

When I looked into getting an SRT exhaust the reason I couldn't do it was the engine would not provide enough pressure to work the bigger pipes. Then it would also not be able to heat them as well to let the air out, which would hinder performance.

I know it is pretty common for us 3.5L guys to put R/T exhausts on our cars, and it seems like it works out great. I am not sure if that would be ok on a 2.7L because I do not have any knowledge about the engine.

We're talking performance and how something should mechanically be done right. If the pipe is to fat, it wont get hot. The pipe needs to be small enough that it will heat up. In some cases, the pipe might actually be wider near the motor and tighter near the tip. The cooler the exhaust gets, the smaller the diameter should be. You've got a 2.7, which expels much less exhaust gas then a 5.7 or 6.1. That pipe was designed for that volume of gas. If you go that wide with your 2.7, you wont push out enough gas to heat the pipe. The reason why you want the pipe to be small enough to get hot is because this creates what is called a "Scavenging" effect...............just like a siphon when you siphon gas or water. Once the flow of fluid starts, it just keeps on going and going and going. The same with an exhaust system. If the pipe is to wide, it will not "siphon" and the gas will get backed up inside the pipe and this will cause a 'gurgling' sound and will not be good for your motor or performance.

Do you understand a bit about how it works now? There is more to an exhaust system then just a pipe to send the gas in the direction from under a car.

I'll be doing my exhaust NEXT weekend. I believe the rear is all one piece but they can cut it down as small as you'd like. Normally, shops just throw this stuff away but you can have it if you want.

that explained alot thanks. well i think ill take the advice of just getting an aftermarket exhaust kit.

so if i want 2 flowmaster 44's.. does flowmaster themself make a dual conversion kit for my v6? what exactly am i buying when i get an aftermarket kit? am i replacing ALL pipes, straight pipes and tips? what's a good price for an entire kit? any suggestions on the best brands? (borla, flowmaster, jba)

lol, why wouldnt anyone just say theyre a forum member to get $200 off. Got any sound clips/vids of that system on a 2.7? can i ask what made you pick that over any other kit?

btw another noob question.. what makes it 600 bucks anyway.. is it cause that brand is more expensive or ?

while im working to get something like that are there other cheap alternatives? like just using some muffler shop pipes when i ask them to convert me to dual and have 2 flowmasters and 2 tips minus resos?

Closest that I found. This is on a 2.7L Charger. Magnaflow Dual In-Dual out Mufflers.

I am going with this, because 1. price to sound quality. I was looking at getting the borla system from Mopar, but it sounded a little more muffled than the Magnaflow did. 2. Magnaflow has a million mile guarantee which is always a good thing.

It is $600 because you get a new catalytic converter, mandrel bend Stainless Steal pipes, 2 new high flow mufflers, and 2 304 Stainless steal polished tips. instead of just a new muffler.

This may help. Screwing around with the diameter of the exhaust system will affect the pressure wave tuning (which the manufacturer would have designed into the system). It's a little complex, but the link has a reasonable explanation.

Gawd knows what sounds you'll get by just cutting pipe and welding it in. I would suggest that if it isn't tuned in some way - it is going to sound like a tuna boat - or worse.
