I'm going to start doing my own oil changes now. What are the approved oil brands for the Scat Pack 6.4L Hemi that won't get me into trouble with the engine warranty?

Thanks!

They will ask for the receipts for the oil purchase to check the date and type as proof the oil changes were being done and proper approved oils were used. I have no doubt cheap 0W-40 oil exists but I don’t want mess with my warranty. I’ve got 60k miles on my engine and I know the MDS system is a ticking time bomb.

I would be sure whatever you use meets the FCA spec (MS6395 or similar), and use an oem filter. Save your receipts in the event a warranty related issue arises, and they ask for documentation.

IIRC, the spec is every 6K or 6 months. Will your driving requirements need more than 1-2 changes a year?

The manual says to use a synthetic 0W-40 meeting API SN. It also says it recommends an oil meeting MS-12633. That sounds like two separate statements and I take it as SN is the minimum spec you must meet for warranty with MS-12633 being the preferred spec and the factory fill but not required.

So with SN, you are free to use a number of good synthetics like Mobil 1, Castrol, etc but to stick with the MS-12633 limits you to basically the factory Pennzoil and one or two others that are hard to find.

Sounds like a plan. The Mobil 1 does not presently meet the spec (on paper anyway), although I am inclined to think it does. The Pennzoil Platinum Ultra is a good buy in 5 qt jugs at Walmart if they have your required weight. I know they have the 5w20 and 5w30 here in SW Ohio. Once warranty is no longer a concern, I would change it once a year, or at 6K.

Best price I have found for the Pennzoil ultra platinum is on Amazon and is what dodge recommends.

46 bucks for 6 quarts. Order two cases first time and SRT filter for about 100 dollars.

Then order one quart 6 pack and one SRT filter after that and oil changes should cost about 60 bucks for the next 5.

That's like 8 bucks a quart. If my math is right this morning.

The only place by me that sells the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0-40 that meets the specs is a few NAPA auto parts stores, at least according to their website. I've seen Pennzoil $2 rebate coupons but that was some time ago & that would make the final cost about $8/quart. Or maybe find a dealer willing to sell to you at a discount.

I stopped at the NAPA auto parts store where the web site said "Order now, pickup today" but they did not have the oil & said could order it, which they did for someone with a HC. Don't know how they can say pickup today unless it's ordered first thing in the morning & they get it delivered in the afternoon. But it's $11.49/quart.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into every other oil thread...

I've used Mobil 1 on the 392 since day 1. In fact, it's what the dealer uses.

I'd be inclined to try the Pennzoil Platinum if it didn't cost double the price of Mobil 1 at Wally World. $22.95 for a 5 quart jug of MB1 and like $10.00 for a MB1 filter and I'm set.

There has been numerous studies done that show that as long as you use the correct oil, brand doesn't really matter. Costco's house brand gets good reviews, as done Amazon's own oil. Not sure if a 0w-40 is offered though. Amsoil is another brand Id be tempted to try, but again, too pricey.

Mobil 1 is good ole reliable for me. Used it in 4 vehicles now over the past decade.

Personally, I pay good money for my cars, and they get maintained using the recommended fluids. If the recommended gas is premium I use premium and when the recommended oil spec is xyz I use xyz.

Penn Platinum Ultra can be expensive, and hard to get if you go looking for it on short notice. But I dont feel an SRT oil change kit with 7 quarts and a filter ordered on line for $75 will break the bank.

Makes me wonder why so many oils shy away from getting MS-12633 certified. It would open the market a little wider for them.

That's if you do it yourself. So I may try it one day.

I've been to 2 Dodge dealers that don't even use it. I paid $150 for an MB1 oil change there, you'd be over $200 for the Pennzoil.

To each their own, use what you like.

You might consider buying several changes at the dealer in advance. I bought 3 changes for $159 of the Pennzoil Ultra Synthetic, and the 899 oem filter. That works out to $53 + tax. By the time I buy 7 quarts at WM, and the 899 filter, I am pretty close to $40 anyway. For $13 more they can deal with the mess, and update the computer to show that it has been done, so there are no questions should an engine warranty claim arise.

$150 seems quite over the top! Where the heck do you live? Chicago, NYC, or Beverly Hills, I could see that.

The Dodge dealers around here don't do that, at least not that I've seen. I laughed the last time I was there getting the airbag inflator recall taken care of, they were advertising a conventional oil chanfe for 5.7 RAMs at $129.99 like it was a deal. I live about an hour east of Philadelphia, Amish country lol. My wife's Infiniti is $160 at the Infiniti dealer, so it's on par.

It's easier to do my own changes with a kid as well. Better than sitting in a waiting room for 2 hours, although the popcorn is good and same with the coffee at some places haha.

I actually dont change it myself. I buy the materials and sublet the labor because they have the pit and do it correctly and dispose of the oil. $15 labor charge.

I had the dealer change oil the first 2 oil changes and the cost was $125 the first time and $98 the second. The third time they wanted $135 and that when I stopped having the dealer change it.

I one time bought oil from the parts department at discounted rate and took the oil and filter to the local oil change business where I learned it was even cheaper to buy the oil change kit on line. They didn't carry the oil themselves and they specialized in Pennzoil but could special order it and sell it at retail. That's when I started ordering the oil change kit on line for $75 and paying the $15 labor charge.

I no longer have the car but in the year I owned it I drove 42,000 miles and did oil changes every 5500 to 6000 miles.

Personally, I have just been using Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic and calling it a day. Available all day long for $21/gallon at Walmart and seems to quiet down the "hemi tick" a lot better than Mobil1 0W-40 (which was the previous recommended fill for this engine) did for me. For the filter, I use a Fram XG2 (also available at Walmart) which is arguably a better filter than the OEM. Not saying the OEM filter is bad, but I like having the better filtration. If you're one of those folks that is paranoid about the warranty then this strategy is not for you.

Wow, an oil thread without bickering. Xmas came early this year. What changed? :)

Best,

Do you use the 5w-40 in a 6.4L? As you said, that was the original 392 spec oil, right? I've always wondering what a slightly heavier oil would do.

I remember running Rotella T6 5w-40 in my Ninja ZX6R, thought it was for a diesel though.

That's a good question. I don't know the official answer. There's a reduction gear set. It actually has a filter and a dip stick too (for each motor in my case). I suspect the change interval exceeds the length of time I'll own the car though. :) For the model S, the interval was 100k miles, but those didn't have filtration.

Best,

I know you mentioned it, but you won't be paying $45.95. The motor takes 7, and both Dodge stealerships near me charge $14/qt for MB1, probably more for the Pennzoil that they don't even use. So minimum you're up to $73.95.

Curiosity got the best of me so I actually inquired at the dealer about a service interval for the Tesla gear reduction units. The answer was "never". To be fair, that's also FCA's version of maintenance for our 8 speed trans (even though ZF, the manufacturer, clearly states otherwise). If I still have it at 100k miles, I'll probably succumb to OCD and change mine. :)

Best,

Jettison some stuff here just to make clear voiding a warranty is akin to buying a salvage title car with 10,000 miles on it. The second folks here wording that a car warranty can be voided it connotes the whole warranty. That's how many people incorrectly take it.

So in that context you are correct, using Amsoil or any other oil not meeting manufacturers recommended specs will not void the warranties. However, the warranty claim can be contested and rejected if the lubricant not meeting spec was determined to be the cause of the problem. And that where Amsoil limited warranty takes over which is good.
