I went to meineke today to see if they could install my headers and high flow cats. He's like let me see the system, he looks at the system and says your changing out the cats? I go of course high flow cats come with the mopar kit. He goes i cannot do that its against the law to change out working cats for another cat. I said to the guy, how is it illegal when the dealership sells and installs these kits? He's like its against the federal law and i want nothing to do with it and he walked away...........

you just gotta find your "friendly neighborhood" spiderm... errr.... exhaust shop.

id find one that does only exhaust. they will ahve spent the most time working on these types of things, rather than a meineke whose techs and mechanics work anythign and everything.

expert > jack of all trades.

It goes by what state you live in. But I was thinking CA was the only state that wont let you mess with the cats at all. Here in Missouri I think it is only against the law for them to install used ones. As long as the cats are new, I think you should be able to install them.

yep its illegal to modify the exhaust system of a car to perform worse (ie more smog) or to replace the cats unless it/they is/are damaged.

Thats funny because the guy who does my Mods (my Brylcreem) did it for $120 off the books at MIDAS. If you live in a major city you can probably find someone to do it cheap and probably better trained.

.....just drill a hole in your cats, hit them with a hammer, discolour them with a torch or damage them in any possible way and they will install the new system for you without any resistance. If you are looking to sell your old cats/system or something like that, then try another exhaust shop or do it yourself and save some cash.

He just didn't want to do it for whatever reason. Maybe too busy, maybe not on commission and would rather stand around all day.

I had a relative who formerly owned a meineke. all his store did was exhaust and brake jobs. In the last year of owning the store, they started doing the promotional oil change (thanks to corporate). wish he still owned the place so he could either get a really good deal on a catback system and/or install for free.

When I still had my v6 charger, I had Carx install my exhaust for me, and they did it under the table for cash.

The part thats against the law is he's not allowed to remove them. Even if he's putting something else on, he doesnt know the quality and emissions compliance of the part. If you got in trouble at some emission inspection and said "well joe blow installed it at meineke" he could get in trouble. Just keep searching around. Hometown mechanics will do it no problem. Go to regional section of where you live and ask around. Or do yourself
