good morning to all,
i bought my son his 2006 dodge charger, which he loves and i also like. recently we had a issue with the tranny. the car got stuck in what i thought was a low gear, per the manual it goes to low gear to prevent tranny issues (i mite be wrong) we took it to the transmission specialist who said the tranny is gone and would cost about 3k because this dodge has the mercedes benz tranny. i took it to the dealer and the dealer said tranny is ok but the valve body needs to be replaced. to me, my understanding of a valve body is like the motherboard for the tranny that controls the gearing etc. i mite be wrong.

any thoughts on this? dealer wants 1600 to replace valve body. i looked online the parts go for about 500 to 800. shall i get a aftermarket part? should i let the dealer install a OEM one? any recalls on this dodge charger with Vin ending in 6h283032?

any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Let's start by saying I am no tranny guy, but do understand a bit about them.

These tranny's can go into "limp" mode for a variety of reasons you can look up, but it keeps the car speed down and keeps it from shifting.
Does yours still act like it is not working correctly or is it better after going in to the dealer?
You could also look into a used tranny from the tons of salvage yards around. Also Craigslist for parts if need be..

These are the best tranny's they have for the charger, so usually hard to tear up real bad. More info or symptoms if possible will help..

thanks for the quick reply, this has been a ongoing issue for about a month. here are some of the issues
my son said he would go into the freeway (accelerate) and the tranny would seem like it is slipping and the speedo would go back to zero
my son brought the car over and it seems like it is stuck on first gear. for this reason alone i didnt drive the car any further.
i took it to another shop and that shop "claims" that the tranny is good but it needs the valve body
another shop says to replace the tranny.

thanks!

The most common problem with the NAG1 tranny going into limp mode is a failure of one of two speed sensors on the lead frame (Part Number 52108308AB). The lead frame sits on top of the Valve Body inside the tranny. This is what the dealer means when he said "Valve Body". Below is a picture of the part.

Here is a video of someone taking the Valve Body out on a Porsche Trans axle that has the NAG-1 tranny. Pretty simple to change even on your back under the car!

WOW you guys are great! i learned alot from you both here. the part is cheap too. now my question is: is this the only part i need to change other than the gasket and filter you mentioned? this is the actual valve body?

You'll also need to replace the fluid. ATF 4 usually 4 qts for what you are doing.

If you watched the video, he removed the aluminum "valve body" which had the electrics on it. You are replacing the electrics part and not the entire aluminum body..Valve body has to come out to get to the electrics..Make sense?

ok, first of all thanks to you ALL...the car is up and running and it was the valve body, as soon as we replaced it the car ran fine. the other shops and one dealer had told me the transmission, only one dealer in riverside said the valve body ( i took it to 5 shops) just to make sure...thanks
