In the manual it actually states " The Sentry Key Immobilizer System is NOT compatible with remote starting systems..." on page 13.

Is this really true and why would it be? So that means all the people who get rmote start loose that security feature. It doesn't make sense for Dodge to sell a remote start if this is true... unless its all about more money.

That might be a mis-quote. I have the remote start and my Immobilizer System is still operating perfectly. I think they were referring to aftermarket remote stat systems. Also, with the mopar version you DO NOT need a seperate key fob, it is integrated into your key and therefore no need to carry an additional key chain fob. I will do some checks on my system when I get home just to verify this. REMOTE START IS GREAT TO HAVE, GET IT :)

i think that now your whole sentry key security thing wont work anymore - i.e. someone could start your engine with a copied key
Well that really sucks. I think I am going to need some confirmation with this. The manual states "May" cause problems. I cant see Mopar creating a product that disables a feature as significant as theft deterrent.

the mopar remote start is supposed to work with the sentry key system

No, nobody can just use a copied key, even with the Mopar/factory remote start. I can't speak to other systems, but on this one, it still has to have a programmed Sentry key to actually keep the motor running in drive.

what ive heard is it needs the key to keep the motor running at all.

In a normal Sentry key application, this is true. An improperly programmed key will cause the car to shut down in 3.5 seconds. However, in this car, and I'll have to double check, I think the trans is the key. What I think happens is that the car can be started and run with no key.

But when you select D (or anything other than park) the car then looks for the Sentry key. No key, shutdown.

Which maybe leads to the question, "Well, what if a thief overrides the gear selector, so that it does not know that you put the car in gear"

To which I answer, "These cars are smart, if it gets a speed signal and it's in park, it shuts down." I really don't know if that's the case, but I'll bet it's that or something like that.

The only thing I can come up with is that using the remote start does initially bypass the sentry key, and that when you put the key in after using the remote start it doesn't actually check the key to verify its the correct one.

Any thoughts??

cbenn126 - Can you give more information about your remote start. My dealer still says it needs a second key fob.

Give me a day or so, I'll see what I can find out. I cannot imagine DCX blindly crippled what has been one of the most effective antitheft systems on the market.

ok here are some thoughts regarding this.........

those who have the mopar remote start on thier LX cars have noted that if they start the car with the remote... when they put the key in, turn it to on, and hit the brake, the radio and other accessories shut off for a couple seconds... then come back on...

now having owned a remote start vehicle in the past... if you do not have the key in and turn it to the run position, when you hit the brake pedal the engine will die...

now what I would think that mopar's system works in the fashion that when you hit the brake pedal, with the key in on, and everything but the engine shuts off for a second, that it looks for the sentry key at that time... if the sentry key is not inserted and the ignition turned to run... then the engine would shut off... just as though you hit the brake pedal with no key inserted

thoughts? opinions? facts? conformation? rebuttal? :D

Having a remote start in my current car I agree with you.

Ah, I didn't know about the pause in the electronics. That's the missing link. See, the SKIS (Sentry Key Immobilizer System) works like this. REmember that there is an antenna in the dash, which encircles the ignition key hole

Key turn

SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) interrogates the key, recieves keys response, which an alogrithmically derived number the keys chip itself produces. and it makes sure the key is one programmed into it as valid for this car.

SKIM plugs said code into an algorithm that also contains the vehicles VIN and performs the operation.

It also sends the keys code to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). The PCM performs the same algorithm, and sends the answer back to the SKIS.

The SKIS then compares it's answers to the PCMS answers and decides to continue operating the car if the math all pans out.

This takes about 3.5 seconds, after which, if your key is incorrect, shutdown. After I think 3 or five tries, the whole system locks down and you need a Starscan to revive it.
I skipped a few other sub-steps, and simplified it a little, as PKI type stuff makes my head hurt, but it just flat works.

Ok this is how my remote start works:

I can remote start the car from my living room, when i press the unlock button to get in the car the car remains on. If I hit the brake the car automatically shuts off. now if i insert the key and turn it to the "on" position then I can put her in drive and take off. there is no PAUSE in the electronics. The radio/AC/etc... remain on without any pause. my dealer forgot to give me the manual so I dont know if there are anymore features. I am waiting to get a manual to find out if there is more to this remote start. I am thinking of getting a duplicate key made up without a any transponder if a locksmith will do it. if i can remote start the car with the appropriate key fob and then get in the car and try to use the copied key to see if this works or not.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY no need for a seperate Key Fob. I had the dealer install this for me before I picked up the car and it works with the Lock button on the Factory Key. I would ask the dealer to make sure he knows what he is talking about.
