Hey guys, new member here. Ive had my 2018 Scat Pack since March 2021. I changed the brakes and rotors from the dealer ones, for obvious reasons, to a set of Powerstops. I noticed the other day that my one rotor now, after a few months, looks quite dirty compare to the others. Ill be including a photo. Which is weird because its the first time out of the countless brake jobs I've done that it looks like this. I dont drive hard at all, dont brakes hard,, im pretty much a grandpa behind the wheel. I like to take car of my cars. Haven't had the chance to pull the wheel and measure the rotor and pads but at least from what I can see there's no difference in the pads on both sides of the car and caliper. Car brakes like its supposed to, I bedded them probably like always, no vibrations or anything concerning etc. Just weird. And as I type this I remeber that it wasn't like that before I sent it to a shop to have a wheel re-painted. So im assuming that maybe it was a build up of rust that now won't remove itself like typical? Idk. Im a bit lost. No I'm not a certified mechanic just mechanically inclined and can do quite a bit. Also those marks aren't grooves like you'd normally see if a rock or something got wedged in there or something. Thought I'd ask and see whats going on. All the hardware is new everything is lubed the way it should be etc

Hit any water on one side versus the other? coulda warped it "some" or caused grooves to form. Looks like it is getting wet because of rust on that side, versus none on the other. This can cause uneven brake wear.

It doesn't look like the pads are touching at all in the 2nd pic. The grooves appear to be from older pads but the new ones should have at least cleaned the high spots off.
They're definitely touching. Only know this as the surface rust that builds up after a night of sitting from moisture comes right off after the first few taps on the brakes.

Where the brakes bedded in after installation per the manufacturer instructions.

Yes and then some. Going up and braking hard but not coming to a complete stop. Same way ove always done it thats why I'm suprised. But the first photo was about a month after changing them and the second is about a month after that. Like o said it was only like that after I got it back from the body shop so im assuming they may have let it sit out in the rain and the rotor rusted more than usual and built up too much dust or something. Not sure.

I'm starting to think thats what it is. That before and after photo was before and after I picked it up from the body shop that redid my one wheel. Im starting to think they left it outside without the wheel on and that one rotor got way more moisture than usual. And when they went to move it around the shop it must've left these "grooves". Otherwise the the wheels always get the same amount of moisture. Im lucky to be in a area that doesn't puddle up on one side of the road usually and when it does I always avoid it. Don't it but maybe when going through a touchless was? Or maybe one of the brake dust cleaners I used got into the pad somehow. Which would be weird.

Wanted to also say, I just recently had the car at the shop for an inspection and everything was good. All pads were where they were supposed to be, measured as of theyre still new. And they didn't say anything about the rotor. But still, I dont like that one out of 4 looks like this.

Update: went out to check it with a caliper to measure the thickness. All is good. But while doing it I decided to check the back of the rotor as well the back looks great. So im assuming the shop left the car out back or something in the elements as it did rain the day the had it and it rusted over. And we the went to move it around it must've started making the marks. For some reason I didn't bother even looking at it while I was there. My fault on that. But I'm gonna jack it up and see if mayne the pad is dirtied up or something and see if I can get it to clean up after awhile. This would also make sense as this is the only rotor that has rust coming from the vents that you can between the before and after photos.

The stock ones looked even worse than this from sitting in the rain and cleared up after a couple thousand miles so let's see what happens

If you still have any opinions of what it may be feel free to let me know on here. But I'm positive it's gotta be from a build up of rust

I've had a couple Powerstop rear rotors do that on my wifes car after they got wet and sat outside (and rusted a bit) but only when I was still using the Powerstop Z26 ceramic pads. When I changed to Raybestos EHT pads (metallic/carbon/ceramic mixture) the rotors cleaned right up. The rear brakes don't do a whole lot of work and you may need to do a few high speed stops to get the pads to clean up that rotor.

I love Raybestos. I used to sell them as well as use them on other cars like my mustang. Maybe l have to switch back next time!

The Raybestos police stuff is still good but they moved overseas now and the rest is questionable. The EHT stuff is still good.
Their former Director of Government Sales & Law Enforcement moved to PFC in the same roll doing a great job. He just received a new Durango Pursuit with an updated BR9 system. They are located in the Carolinas.

They got a warehouse/factory here in PA too. They are the only brake parts that we kept in our stores for stock parts. We had power stop but very selective per store. I think I'm gonna go back to Raybestos. I always used their EHT pads and never hd a problem. I havent tried their better rotors but I had a client that bought the "FZN" coated part numbers often and loves them.

I think, something like 3-4 month ago, I changed the stock to Powerstop Z26 - rotors and ceramic pads

The stock BR5 brakes and pads lasted 6+ years / 150K km, rotors were clean, like mirror. Taking this in account, the PowerStop isn't obvious upgrade vs stock BR5.

The PowerStop Z26 rotors that I got they are slotted and drilled, and if remember correctly, they visually larger than OP's.

Sorry, the above doesn't resolve a problem, but makes me puzzled.

My stock ones were terrible, way worse than this. Dust everywhere etc. I know powerstop isn't the greatest but compared to the stock in my experience theyre better. Im just gonna go wback to Raybestos like I did with my past cars. Ive never had a problem with them and relatively around the same price.

Also I opted for the Z17 package. Coated plain faced rotors as I dont brake or drive hard so don't need to worry about excesses dust. The Z17 pads are a similar material as the Z26. Maybe its cause its the rears that they look smaller compared to yours I have the 4 piston set up up front. The photo is of the rear not sure if I mentioned originally

You right, different package explains. Thank you
