I have a Cobra something-or-other and it does me fine. Saved me from getting a few tickets already. And it cost me only $60.

Escort Passport X50 blue.
X2. ill mention that i had to send mine back for replacement b/c it started detecting all radar bands in known areas of no radar signals (like my garage) on a recurring basis. got old. but it definitely works better than the POS whistler I had before. it can show up to like 10-12 signals at once with each strength (using different display setting). and i like the 'loud' tone setting that can be overheard during loud radio play.

This is always a major & hot topic on these boards.

To sum it up, it's all about what you are willing to spend, but, if you look at all the older posts & reviews....The (3) most popular are, in no particular order:

The Passport 8500
Beltronics RX65
Valentine 1

So you guys don't get many false positives with the Escort?

My buddy had a radar detector [forget which brand] and he said that he would get lots of false positives near construction areas etc.

Do get a couple of false K bands, both at self-storage facilities on way to work, but they are weak signals. If the signal is strong(full band) on K/Ka or Laser its real. I also believe the new Escorts have a learning mode to block out falses.

My Valentine 1 will go off near pharmacies and banks sometimes, but weeds out most false alarms!
