I want to paint the trim around my gauges and the inserst in my steering wheel. I went to a dealer near me that has done this for the dealer where I bought my car. They told me that the whole panel has to come off and be taped and I will be out of a care for a few days. I know I am not the only one that has thought of doing this, so I am turning to my fellow Charger peeps for help. It seems like just the silver part might come off from the rest of the panel. But I would like more info before I decide to let these guys take apart my dash.

What are they, stoned? The trim rings come off separately, all you have to do is pull evenly while yanking them. The issue I have with Dodge is that they don't sell these rings separately. You have to buy the complete panel, and it ain't cheap. I've already purchased a spare nav bezel and need only another shifter bezel and trim ring set so that I may also paint the ones I have now.

Try sending a PM to TBYDaytona40

He did both, I believe. He should be able to give you some pointers/advice/instructions.

I just used 3M scotchbrite pads to scuff the rings up, primered them and then used aerosol touch up paint from the dealer followed by a couple coats of clear.

The rings on the radio, those are a little more involved, I'll try to do a writeup on how to do them if I have time.

oh just do it yourself. Call me and I'll walk ya through it on the phone. We'll do the cheater way, which is how I did it. Maybe I'll tell ya how to paint the emblem on the air bag too :)

I did mine and thought I'd add a couple of things *not* to do! :)

The rings around the gauges come out; just pull evenly. They are held by fragile little clips, which are easy to break. :( Don't do this when you're stressed out.

I couldn't get the yellow krylon paint at the time I did mine. So, I used plastic primer, then a regular yellow paint, then a clear gloss. It was good for a while, but sunlight apparently damages it a bit and the original mirror smooth finish doesn't look so good now. :( So, definitely make sure you get suitable paint.

Interestingly, my plastic airbag cover was slightly bent and deformed on one corner, which I just hadn't really noticed before. I heated it gently with a hairdryer and was able to correct this a bit. The instructions posted by TBYDaytona40 on how to remove this are good. It's actually easier than it sounds!

I would try it yourself!

but they don't sell the rings seperately?

i'd love to do this to my SE...
Don't buy the trim rings...waste of $$$ IMO.

I just did mine not long ago. I bought a small can of Krylon 'metallic' spray paint for about $2.50, pulled the rings off carefully; painted them with a couple coates of the spray paint and then a couple coats of clear and they look great (matches the steering wheel inserts).

Just do it yourself...

Hello All,

I had the trim around my radio / navigation unit, the ashtray, shifter trim and the cluster trim painted inferno red. I removed the pieces and brought them to a local body shop. They charged me $100, which I thought was an excellent price. The wood kits cost more than that and the painted trim looks much better. I had this done in June and eveything looks perfect. The good thing about having the body shop paint the pieces is they bake the paint and it has a hard finish. If I knew how to download pictures I would shoot you a few.
