Here is an odd problem. I purchased a Passport 8500 Radar Detector used. It was in excellent condition; box, cables, manual etc. It worked fine for a couple of days then started going into a self calibrate / service required state. I ended up sending the unit back to the guy for a full refund. I purchased another used 8500 and it does the same thing. I have talked to Escort Radar a couple of times and they also suspect there is something about the car. I mentioned that I had a NAV unit and they suggested running the unit in voltage monitoring mode to see if the voltage was going out of limits (12-15VDC). I did this and the voltage stays pretty stable at 13.8VDC, but the problem recurs at random. Does not seem to be heat related either. I did notice that the unit will laser alert if it gets near the LCD NAV display, however, I mount it about 1/2 up the windscreen. As a further test, my wife has been running the Passport in her Yukon Denali (also has NAV and XM) for three days now and the unit has had no issues.

Has anyone seen this type of problem? I may just trade in the used unit for the newer 8500 X50 model, but I don't want to spend that amount of money to end up with the same problem.

maybe a crazy idea....but, ya think anything to do with the "solar glass" we have? The Laser comment made me think...I get that sometimes when the sun is low, so wondering if the solar glass is polarizing the light and/or whatever signals the radar detector is processing...just a thought.

mine would go off and stupid times.
2am. 1pm whatever.

i think it has to do when you stomp on it ths electrical signal does something to cause the laser detector to go off. we have a fly by wire system in our cars afterall.

it has not done it since the fireware update.

Yeah i had the self calibrate and service errors a couple of times. i attributed it to leaving it mounted while parked in the sun all day. Could the same be happening to you.

I also have had a couple of quick suspicious laser hits.

how much does it cost to send in for a fimware upgrade?

I had the calibrate/service needed come up a handfull of times over the many years I've had the X50 and never really mattered... I'd reset it (unplug/replug) and all was well... Or let it calibrate and it'd be done for months/year... This laser thing recently got worse for me. I remember it going off at random times once in a great while over the years but then lately it seemed almost every time I floored it it would go off and random times a lot... Sometimes when I started car, sometimes when coming around a curve, etc... Not sure what to think. I moved it up the widshield to right above the rearview and still have same... You can shut off laser or any other band for that matter... go into menu by pressing top two buttons, scroll through menu till it says band something by pressing left top button, then scroll through the bands till you get to laser with the right button, then press the front mute button to toggle on and off... There are some other great features in the menu if you haven't played like quick start so it beeps once instead of the long startup jazz... I called Escort and they would service the unit for 50 bucks or so, I just don't have the laser guns around here and don't particularly care for now... I'd like to eventually go built in anyways....
