I need a 12 gauge pump action shotgun and an alarm. My charger got broken into for the second time in 4 months. Since I changed out my door handle, removing the driver door lock, this time they punched the trunk lock.

They took my car tool box and a flashlight and not sure what else, as I have a lot of junks in my trunk.

I disconected the trunk lock tonight, but now I cannot open my car if my battery dies. A while back, I did purchase a 12' choke cable for the old cars with manual chokes, that I planned to hook up to the trunk release so I can access the trunk in case my keyless entry failed. I guess now I have to hook it up, before something happens and I have to do something drastic to gain entry.

Not sure if I am going to remove the trunk lock totally and plug the hole with a large lag bolt or something similar or look at putting in a better lock, something like a star lock. Going to check out some lock places this weekend to see what options I have.

I am also thinking about re-wiring the trunk button in the car to a wire that is hot only when the key is in the ignition, this way, incase if someone breaks in the front, they cannot just push the button to open the trunk. I know they can access the trunk through the back seat, but the harder you make it, the more chance you have of the person not wanting to do it or them getting caught.

If we had laws like in Texas, I would stakeout my own car and shoot the criminals as they try to break in. :armed: Too bad too many liberals in Hawaii, protecting the criminals at the expense of the law abiding citizens.

hubby would have a kimber but we cant really afford it...im looking to pick up a ruger 22/45 for cheaper fun....we reload for rifle and let me say just within half a year component prices have more than doubled....and yes my gun habit is what has cut into my car mod habit....
Actually, you discust me. You would kill someone for stealing? Your 100% sure about that? 100% sure you just shot the right person? 100% sure you will not go to jail? 100% sure he did not have friends that are going to come around after you shot him and take you out?

Its a car, your willing to risk your life over it? get real, if push came to shove you would not shoot, if you did, you would probaly ruin your life in so many ways.
I laugh my azz off every time one of you narrow minded people churp up about guns. Your short sightedness is beyond all reason. Why the rest of the world views the US and nuts is based on your total lack of the ability to think 5 min down the road from your actions.

I'll visit you in jail every month, or your gravesite!.
I laugh every time some feeble minded anti-gun liberal changes his attitude towards guns and self defense AFTER they personally experience crime to their person or property.
In MO we have what is called the Castle Doctrine - basically that your home is your castle and you have the right to defend person and property from criminals - and this considers your car as an extension of your castle.
The supreme court has already determined that the police are not responsible for protecting you leaving us to provide our own protection via self defense.
In the case you criticize above, one thing I would be 100% sure of is that this particular criminal would never threaten me or my property (or anyone else's) again. As far as being 100% sure you shoot the right person - he wasn't talking about shooting someone just walking by his house... but someone who was stealing his property and caught red handed in the act of doing so.
As to how the world views us, well first of all I couldn't care less what someone in Europe or Asia thinks about me... and to tell the truth, in my travels around those continents in the Army I haven't seen the attitudes that you and the mainstream media put forth as what the world thinks about us as Americans - I am not counting France... they looked down their noses at Americans when I was there in the 70's - long before Bush supposedly made them hate us. Another oddity that contradicts the whole "the world hates America" position is the undeniable fact that people from all over the world do whatever it takes to come here to take advantage of the rich opportunities that we offer in this country which is simply not possible to achieve in their own native land. Ya gotta start screening out all this propaganda that the mainstream media keeps trying to feed ya!:rolleyes2:

hmm... the charger forums is slowly turning into a gun forum... Nice.. so, theres alot of break in hawaii huh? gee... REALLY looking forward to be stationed over there:rolleyes2:... hope whoever breaks into my car can outrun my Remington 700, XD40, Mossberg 500, and my Makarov..:banana_hitit:
Yes, there are a lot of vehicle break-ins in Hawaii. I'm with the HPD and have seen more than my share of vehicle break-ins (Unauthorized Entry to a Motor Vehicle (UEMV)). The criminals primarily target whatever flavor rental cars are popular as well as Hondas, Toyotas and Nissans. Nothing is totally safe but any of the above are more likely to be a target than others. The "good" thieves will learn how to punch the doorlock of specific models of vehicles and quickly gain access to the interior while leaving barely any visible evidence of their visit. Others just use the "smash-n-grab" method where they smash one of the windows and grab something from the seat. "Smash-n-grab" usually requires a 2nd person who is the driver in the waiting getaway vehicle.

Unfortunately, V6 Chargers are a common rental vehile here therefore they get broken into a lot. Tourist destinations are a favorite feeding ground for these predators. Beach Parks, Scenic Lookouts, Shopping Areas and Trail Heads are all popular.

To avoid being a target there are a few things you can do...
1) Remove your exterior locks (door/trunk).
2) Make sure there are NO bags, purses, iPods, cameras, cash or anything of possible value visible in the cabin of your vehicle from the outside.
3) Leave your Pit Bull in your car while you're away, windows cracked open of course.
4) Park in a highly visible and busy location.

Thanks for the tips! We love Hawaii and are coming back again this year for 2 weeks. We have been lucky and not had any issues with break in's but we have followed a lot of your rules. Mainly, we leave NOTHING in the car while parked in a lot or at our house rental. Oh, and we usually rent something cheap like a Jeep or Sebring Convertible. I guess the thieves don't target those. :rocker:

Should read:

To avoid being a target there are a few things you can do...
1) Leave car unlocked (so you don't to replace locks).
2) Make sure you leave nothing in/on car (including engine, tires, etc).
3) Hire a Moke (Many people in Hawaii compare the Moke to the southern "*******" in terms of personality) to watch your car. :rocker:
4) Sell the car, catch TheBus. :driving:

I grew up in Hawaii. I went to Laie elementary, King Intermediate, and Castle High school, and we didn't have to worry about anyone breaking into our cars. Because we owned rust buckets (bondo specials).

Alot of tourist don't know about the crime rate in hawaii. Because they visit for a week or two and when they run out of money they leave (2007 Auto Thefts: 6,715).

shortshot I am really sorry about your car.

Sorry to hear about your two break-ins. Well, mine might top yours. I've had FOUR break-ins over the past year, and they keep going in the driver side key hole. Need to know where I can get that panel changed to the one without the keyhole. Over the four times, have gotten four iPods and lately, a laptop which I only had about 5 months! I never leave anything out, and it always happens downtown Atlanta, GA. Any suggestions?
Purchase a driver's side rear door handle. It does not have a lock. Same exact size as the front door and will swap right out.

I suggest taking out the trunk lock also. I took out the door lock, but they hit the trunk.
Charger broken into

Thanks, I will look into that today. These Chargers must be too easy to break into. Dodge needs to come up with an accesory for the front door panel. I will voice my opinion to them as well. Thanks again. Very helpful.
