Are you always going to have MDS shut off ? There has to be a reason why they say 5W-20. I am no engineer, but I rely on someone who does this for a living to know what is best for the engine.

The requirements for oil viscosity are not based on having or not having MDS. It's based on the manufacturer's recommendations for what they feel will provide the best fuel economy (thinner oil is better for this), cold start capability and lubricity based on the tolerances of the engine.

The only reason to ever deviate from this is if you're running a custom oil like Quantum Blue (which is tailored to the engine and the type of duty it sees). Otherwise stick to 5W-20.
