I went with the new switch rather then modify the knob. Followed the instructions as posted on this site. In terms of a tool used to get to the three retaining clips on the old switch - I took an old feeler gauge I had lying around that I never use (flat metal "sticks" in varying widths) and cut off three very thin but still strong ones. They slipped in easily between the dash and the switch plate and they all hit the mark. You could feel the clips compress.
A little push and wiggle (not me - the feeler gauges) and out she came. No scratches at all to the dash or the old switch.
I had disconnected the battery (too easy not to) and auto worked right away upon reconnection.
If anyone wants me to mail you the three peices of metal I'll be happy to do it or you can buy a guage for a few bucks.
