Just filled up my tank on my 2006 Charger R/T for the first time after having the fuel tank replaced under the lifetime warranty extension due to the car shutting off after refueling.

My issue is that upon filling the tank after driving on the low fuel light for 20 miles, it only took 16.6 gallons to fill. I have driven this car for 140,000 miles and have always driven 20 miles on the light and have always taken about 18 gallons to refuel.

My concern is that my tank was replaced with a non-hemi 18 gallon tank instead of the correct 19 gallon tank.

The part number on this replacement tank is: 04726039 AA
Can anyone confirm that this is the correct 19 gallon tank or have I been given the wrong fuel tank for my car?

Thanks Ddaddy!

Maybe the pump was under charging me (not likely) or the low fuel light goes on way earlier with the new tank.
Do you have EVIC on your car? If so, check the fuel level data and see what it is when the light comes on.

Otherwise, try recalibrating the fuel gauge...

Cluster Range Diagnostic and recalibration.

1) Be sure key is set to the 'OFF' position.
2) Press and hold the 'Trip Meter Reset' button.
3) Turn the key to 'ON' position.

The gauges will step through the whole range and reset the calibration.

I do have the EVIC. This is good information and I will try it after this tank is used if results remain the same. The tank was replaced and 1/4 tank of fuel was transferred from old to new so maybe a full tank will act normal to me.

Thanks again.

BTW, how do you check the fuel level data?

I know how to get to the menus where the digital speedo is. I assume this is the first step....
Yes. Once you are there then scroll through the screens until you get to this one...

19g = 19 gallon gas tank.
Since the gas tank is split into a left and right section that straddles the driveshaft, there are fuel quantity sensors on the left and right side.
LT: fuel quantity sensed in the left tank (pints)
RT: fuel quantity sensed in the right tank (pints)

Since the values are given in pints, divide by 8 to get gallons (example: a value of 64=8 gallons)

Note: the fuel from the right tank is pumped into the left one on return from the fuel pump. Over time the left tank value will grow and the right tank will drop until the left tank is full (80 pints)

AVG: an average of the total fuel quantity (pints). This number is necessary for displaying proper fuel quantity on the gas gauge and is used to calculate "distance to empty" and trigger the "Low Fuel" display.

The MinL/MinR values can be ignored since they are minimum resistance values the ECU uses in its algorithm to dampen needle movement as the fuel sloshes around. The "AVG" is the dampened value used to position the gauge needle.

Here are a few other things to remember about the "Low Fuel" warning...

Low fuel warning is triggered based on the calculation of MPG on the EVIC and fuel remaining. It is set to trigger at 50 miles remaining.

If your calculated MPG is 20, then the warning is triggered at 2.5 gallons. If the calculated MPG is 10, then it is triggered at 5 gallons.

Therefore, the trigger value is based on the average MPG stored in the EVIC and not an actual fuel level. This is where the EVIC fuel level display becomes very useful to know exactly how much fuel remains in the tank.

Once the Low Fuel level indicator has been set, resetting the MPG value will not reset it until fuel is added to the tank.

On non-EVIC vehicles, the low fuel warning is triggered at 3 gallons remaining. This means the distance you can go is determined solely by the MPG you are getting at that point in time. On a cold day and a just started engine, this may be as low as 25 miles...or as much as 60+ miles while cruising at moderate speed with an engine at full operating temperature.

This is why on non-EVIC vehicles, it is always best to assume that when the low fuel warning light comes on, you only have 20 miles to get fuel before you are SOL.

I do have the 19g in the EVIC and now, thanks to you, I know so much more about the numbers I see on the EVIC.

Regarding the trigger of the low fuel warning light, I have always let the light go for 20miles because once I forgot the light was on and i ran out with 26 miles on the light. I don't think I could ever get 50 miles on the light as you say it is meant to indicate. For all the years that i've refilled at 20 miles on the light, i have refilled at over 18 gallons while averaging 15 or 16 mpg. This tells me I could never reach 50 miles on the light. Are they all set to work the same?

Thanks so much for all the info.
