I noticed a strong gas smell in and around the car several weeks ago after filling up but I did not overfill or spill gas anywhere. After having a mechanic diagnose the issue he found that the fuel pump under the rear seat on the right side was leaking and had fuel pooling up at the top.

As first step he replaced the O-Ring seal on the fuel up. After replacing the seal there was no leak initially but it occurred again after the next fill up. So it seems the leak only occurs when the gas tank is full. Since the seal was already replaced but the leak is still there I took it to the Dodge dealer who will have to diagnose it further but they told me that it is most likely the gas tank that is leaking and they have seen many problems like this already and I am not the first one.

What should I expect as far as the diagnosis and how much should I expect to pay for the repairs?

I have the same issue with my 2011 Dodge Charger SE RWD, Dealer informed me it would cost $2,070 to replace tank, which is crazy since I only have 77,000 miles on call NHTSA, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (888)327-4236 and file a complaint, (safercar.gov) and they will investigate, they will force Dodge to do a recall, Dodge is aware of a defect in the design of those gas tanks, they have since changed the design, they will have to fix our vehicle or refund any money we spent on repairs.

I have a 2011 Dodge Charger Rallye. I bought it new. I had a very strong gas smell in my garage and eventually inside my car. I had it towed to the dealership last Thursday due to concerns of fire or explosion. They diagnosed that my secondary fuel pump was leaking under my rear seat due to a crack on top of the fuel pump. When I inquired what could cause the crack, he had no answer except it is plastic and might have gotten brittle over time. The car isn't quite 7 years old, and it's garage kept in South Carolina. I'm reading all sorts of similar complaints online. My dealership says there's no recall to date. It sure looks like there ought to be. I have never had a fuel pump leak on a car, and I had a Buick to 185,000 miles and a Chrysler to 160,000 miles. Did you get anywhere with NTHSA?

Carolina Dodgegirl:
Do you know if there is rust on the pump retainer ring. The Gen 2 Durangos have an issue where the retaining ring rusts, and then the expansion caused by the rusting metal cracks the FP housing. So far, the result has been an Evap leak and a P0456 code. I am not aware of any fuel leaks because of this issue.
Either way the problem is the result of cheap parts, and should not be as such for a vehicle in any price class. Fuel systems are not the place to be cheap.

I am just now getting back to this forum. I don't know if the ring was rusted. I'm guessing not, because they didn't mention anything about that. However, I am extremely frustrated. They replaced both fuel pumps, but gave the car back to me wreaking of gas inside! I had it detailed this past weekend, $160 later it still wreaks like gas! There was a piece of material, looks like of like the padding under carpet with plastic on top between the fuel pumps and the seat. It wreaked! So I had my detailer cut that piece out, hoping that would take care of it. It did not! I am wondering if the gas saturated my back seat. They steam shampooed it. This is all so unsafe! I can't believe they're approved to manufacture a car where the fuel pumps are inside the car like this!

Thank you for your reply. I did not have time last week to get back on this forum. The dealership replaced the fuel pumps, but they returned my car to me still wreaking of gas. The service manager basically told me it would just eventually go away. The material over the fuel pumps wreaked. I had my detailer cut it out. He said the smell would never come out of that material. I am wondering if my seat was saturated with gas. This is all totally unacceptable to me and horribly unsafe!

I would definitely appreciate Dodge's help. I'm not sure how to send a private message on here to give you my VIN.

I'm going to piggy back on this post, I hope that's ok.

I have this same issue on my 2011 Dodge Charger. It's been going on for quite a while now. Years, in fact. Yesterday I came out of the store - had been there for less than an hour - and you could see the large puddle under the back passenger door. My husband and I watched it for a while and the drips were long and fairly steady. It's scary and I have waited too long to take action, but I have to do something now. I would also appreciate any help Dodge could offer.

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone had this problem solved yet? My 2011 R/T has smelled of gas for the past couple of weeks and yesterday leaving my driveway, left a trail of gas out and back into my driveway. I cant even sit in my car without all the windows down and I have the same puddle underneath the rear passenger side

Ben:
Welcome to the forum. as far as I know, there has been no recall or other type of program to address this issue. If you are so inclined, there are access covers for the pumps underneath the rear seat bottom. You can remove them and see if you can observe any problem. In any case, I would not continue to drive a car with such an issue. It could be deadly. If you happen to park in your garage, and have a gas furnace or water heater in there, that could be a recipe for disaster.
