I hear a lot of discussion on this board about cops and getting your car impounded. Apparently, in New York they take your vehicle automatically if you get caught driving over 100 mph.

What's the sense in owing a hot Dodge Charger if you're not going to ever drive it over 100 mph? You might as well drive a Honda Civic. I assume that all you fellas fully intend to break some speed laws from time to time with your new vehicle. That said, I never hear any discussion on this board about making sure you get your speed on without getting busted. There is never any talk about radar detectors.

I had one 20 years ago. They did indeed work. I hear the technology is even better now. The Valentine One (advertised in the car mags like Motor Trend) even has directional arrows to tell you exactly which direction the signal is coming from so you don't have to have your head on a swivel.

So, does anybody on this board use a radar detector? Are you at least thinking about getting one after you get your Charger?

Sometimes, the best part of owning a car that can go fast is not driving it fast. There's kinetic energy (honda) and there's potential energy (Charger). I'll take potential.

i haven't owned a radar detector in ages (like 15 years).... i guess i pretty much know where i can and can't speed in my area. i would like to hear what others think about the "new age" of radar detectors. for example, do they still go off everytime you drive by a grocery store? i remember mine going off 25 times a day to false alarms....ended up ditching it b/c it was always doing that.

Hey GoDaddy -

I have the Passport 8500 x50. You can turn off the X-band on it which is what makes it go off past store alarms, which is OK because the cops haven't used X band in years. I truely love my Passport. It even detects laser at a fair distance. My town of Naperville the cops are using laser now. My passport picks it up when they hit vehicles in front of me. I wouldn't drive (or should I say speed) without it. Note to ya - the Passports are not cheap $325 - $350.

haha they still do that. ive never owned one but my friend had one and it always went off for absolutely no reason until he, too, ditched it out of irritation.

my theory is if that things going off, its too late and WHAT THE HELL am i gonna say when the cop walks up and sees a radar detector in the windshield. besides, i know where i can and cant get away with it. just gotta use some common sense is all. i havent gotten a speeding ticket since i was 17.

Illegle here in the state of Virginia, they used to take it away at the time of arrest (being ticketed) and destroyed but, VA supreme ruled they could not prove it was being used in the car so they can take now for evidence purposes but must return it to you, but mostly they write serial number on the ticket and let you keep it. The fine is $40.00 plus $55.00 court cost anyone in VA wanting to know the excact wording of the law http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-1079
I am like Go Daddy I pretty much know where and abut what time they set to pounce on unexpecting prey.

I use a radar detector my wife bought me off ebay. Picks up radar, laser, k, etc. Even picks up signals around corners and from troopers halfway down the next hill on the expressway. Wouldn't run without it. I usually drive 5/7 miles over the speed limit. On the expressway I drive like I stole it just to keep in the flow of traffic. I like that the car has the ability to do in excess of 100....which I have been....simply because I can do it if the need arises and I sure the heck can get out of the way in a flash if needed.

Keep in mind guy's that no detector will help against "instant on" radar which is widely used through out the US. That also applies to Vascar. But I'm sure you knew this.

Folks, to expand on what Mike said. Instant on radar basically uses a very large burst of energy so the gun gets a large amount of return energy very fast. Instead of the normal 2-3 second time, its about 1 second.

And while Mike is right that no radar detector will save you if targeted personally, thre is a slight chance that you will get an alert if they hit a car ahead of you, backscatter as it were. The chance however is slight, you have to be lucky.

Laser is about the same, although there is much less reflected energy, since it is after all a pretty focused beam.

VASCAR is an acronym for using visual markers and a stopwatch to ascertain a vehicles speed. Most commonly done from aircraft, (youve all seen the signs, "Speed limit enforced by aircraft" unless you never leave the city) it's real simple, and unbeatable.

You'll usually, but not always, see thick (2-3 feet) white lines painted in the breakdown lanes on either side of the roadway. These are the start point, which the trooper in the aircraft starts the clock. Next point, a specified distance away, he stops the clock. Looks up the time elapsed on a chart, calls your color and make down to the waiting officers.

I dont run one anymore, but if I were going to, Valentine would be it. Valentine himself is the guy who made this tech work back when.

Actually, that isn't exactly true. I've been nailed on the highway running between Sierra Vista and Tucson in Arizona by instant on 4 times already, and each time I was doing between 10-30 over the limit. You have to have a good detector, like a Bel or Passport, which is very sensitive and picks up the signal and processes it fast. Also, you have to have good reaction time, as you have to slam on the brakes in a hurry. One time when i was nailed by the instant on I was still pulled over and got a talking to by the cop even though he couldn't ticket me. He threatened to give me a ticket for reckless driving (due to the sudden braking), but in the end let me walk. That was the most recent occurence and since then I've kept it to no more than 10 over during long stretches of driving.

Poly, you were, as you say nailed 4 times, as opposed to being alerted from a Ka,K signal in time enough from being nailed. Sounds like the cop was being generous, we he in fact got you. :) Not arguing with you bud, it's just a no win situation from my view. :)

Mmaloy,
Good discussion isn't arguing :) I love the dialogue. Your right, I was nailed 4 times, but never clocked by the radar over the speed limit  My problem is I do a lot of driving back and forth late at night when there isn't anyone else on the road for miles, so no one in front of me to take the radar first and let me know a smokey is ahead

Being a prior law enforcement officer and all, I feel fairly confident I can talk me way out of a ticket. here are some pointers...and yes they work...they worked when I pulled people over and worked when I get pulled over...

This is what I do..try it if you like:

1. I roll the window down and put both hands outside the car...
2. I then ask if got me on a Kustom Signals RADAR or LIDAR Pro-Laser (since Kustom Signals is the predominate RADAR manufacture in the country.
3. I make it a point to state that when I use to run RADAR that I loved using the Kustom Signals Golden Eagle III and the Kustom Signals HR-12, but hated using the KR-10 since it was so burdensome to mount and fequency tune check it (being that it was outside the car).
4. If I have my gun with me, I of course show my conc. weap. permit and let him. her know where it is.

I have done this many times and never got a speeding ticket. I however had the cop downgrade the ticket on spot for "Failure to Obey a Highway Sign"...

I also live in VA where RADAR and LIDAR detectors are illegal and have gotten a ticket for it also.

But...if the blue is behind you, you can always lay on it...they can't outrun you...

Your making me jelous, dag:) Ive gotten out of couple, thanks to my Navy service, and got one because of:)

Officer sees Department of Navy base access decal. Since both Navy and Marines use that decal...

"Navy or Marines, boy?" With no clue at all what he had been:)

Figure about %70 chance he's a Marine, but a %100 chance a lie would get caught.

"Navy, sir", All troopers are Sir:)

"Bad choice, squid, heres your ticket" :)

My wifes job entitles her to Maryland Law Enforcement tags, but she I should NOT have them:) She's right. :)

I was thinking about finally getting a detector but I don't know if I'll bother after reading all this.
.
Last stop was on the NY State Thruway at about 85 mph.
I told the trooper I would really appreciate not getting a ticket that day plain and simple. He paused, and then said "ok" and started B.S. with me. I was so shocked it took a few seconds for it to register.
Doesn't work so well when I'm on the bike although the last trooper got both my wife and I on radar. He took pity on the abuse two speeding tickets would do to our insurance (when I mentioned it) and gave us two for "Parking in the Roadway". About $125 each but no points.

I don't know if the rest of us can use #2 and #3 for obvious reasons. I am a 911 dispatcher and just last night I got pulled over by one of my own city officers. It wasn't for speeding, it was for turning off the ESP and laying 2 little strips of rubber on the street right in front of him! :asleep: He was hiding in the shadows of a dark street with an unmarked traffic car. As soon as I saw the headlights come on and the car quickly jump out into traffic behind me I knew I was busted. I pulled over and once he recognized me (he hadn't seen my new car yet) he turned his lights off and pulled up next to me and laughed. "What are you doing!?!?!" I calmly told him that I was never out of control at any time! 2 minutes later, dispatch called me on my cell and had a nice laugh too after my license was called in! I bought pizza last night for work and everybody else had a nice laugh.

It is so hard to resist the power of that beautiful Hemi!!!

Tom.
