So I went to a place today to talk to them about tinting my windows. I was leaning towards having someone do 35 on the front doors and maybe 20 or 25on the rear and 15 on the back window but he said the Dallas cops are cracking down on non-legal tint's (darkness). He said something about a Dallas PD Officer was shot from behind a tinted car window so they are really enforcing this law.

I'm new to the area, how much trouble am I really asking for if I do this? I already have it in my mind that I’m going to get a speeding ticket soon so do I want to give them more reason to write me up?

Texas legal:

20% on all side windows
As dark as you want on back window.

Really, why would you want darker than 20%?

1) You're just making it harder to see at night. My firend has to open his power rear window on his Ram to back up at night because he put 5% on his rear window.

2) If you make it illegal, then be prepared to deal with the consequences. Putting on extra dark tint, is like leaving your front plate off. It just gives John Q Law another excuse to pull you over and give you crap, and you can't always get out of the court date.

Actually no...it changed last year. They decided rather than do the 35/20/anything (Front side/rear side/back windows) the law changed to 20% on any side window, and anything you want on the back glass.

I verified this with Z-Tint in Grand Prairie (very reputable tint/alarm shop). They are sticklers about the law because they do alot of tinting for the area car dealers. I also have two friends that recently went through state inspection certification and they pointed out the law change there also.

I just had mine done by a pretty reputable place. I guess it's time for a google search on who is correct.

So here is the final word. It looks like 25% is the legal limit on the side windows (both front doors and back doors are considered side windows) and the back window can be anything you want as long as you have side mirrors. I went to check my receipt and it says 30/30/15 - I think I may want them to re-do it. I told them as dark as legally possible which would give me 5% more :)

What are the actual state driving laws for after-market window tinting?

View the reference in the Transportation code :
§ 547.613. Restrictions on Windows
Windshield
Glass coating or sunscreening devices

Cannot extend downward beyond the AS-1 line; or
Cannot extend more than 5 inches from the top of the windshield without an AS-1 line.
If sunscreening devices are used above the AS-1 area of the windshield, the light transmittance value must be 25% or more;
The luminous reflectance of any additional sunscreening devices used must be 25% or less;
Sunscreening device cannot be red, blue or amber in color.
Side Windows
All side windows must have at least 25% light transmittance and luminous reflectance of 25% or less, over the entire surface area of the window.

*Rear (back) Window

If vehicle has left and right outside mirrors, there is no minimum light transmission requirement.
If not equipped with both outside mirrors, the rear window must have no less than 25% light transmittance and a luminous reflectance of 25% or less.
The manufacturers installed glazing shade band is excluded.

Time to call them back and see if I can get this changed.
