The check engine light came on in my 2012 SXT+ a few days ago. I took it to Advanced Auto for the free diagnostic. I had 3 codes, all P0302 indicating a cylinder 2 misfire. The 3rd code was listed as "permanent".

The guy who helped me out said that it would need to go to my local dealer to have a permanent code removed, and that they would likely have the exact answer for me. He was thinking spark plug replacement or new coils but he wasn't certain.

Is this true about the permanent code reading? Has anyone else had this issue? I would rather not take it to my local dealer as they charge through the nose and I don't trust them. I've had issues in the past with poor work and over charging.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me that what he actually meant is that the code is still active so it can't be cleared.

I would guess a defective coil pack on that cylinder or possibly a bad spark plug.

Thank you. Would a local garage be able to clear that code by replacing the coil or spark plug? I would prefer to use someone I trust.

It's an easy enough thing to diagnose and repair so your local shop should be able to do it. As far as clearing the code, once the issue is repaired the CEL will clear itself and you don't need to worry about the stored code since it won't be active anymore.

Great! I'll stop in to my local garage and have them look it over. I appreciate the information!

Since it is cylinder number two, you might be having the bad cylinder head syndrome.....

Thank you for this article. I will definitely be checking into this. I have noticed a more lethargic acceleration recently and since the check engine light came on, I have not seen the "Eco" indicator when cruising. I have not noticed any ticking, when the car is in auto or auto/manual with the paddle shifters.

Finally got the car into my local CDJ service department after they told me they didn't have a loaner car for that period. Took it in yesterday and they have called today to say they will be fitting a new cylinder head. Looks like I will get the car back tomorrow, so a 3 day turnaround isn't too bad. Hopefully they have done a decent job. Thanks again for all the help and information.

Yep, the cylinder # 2 misfire code (once it goes permanent) is a dead give away that it needs a new head.

At least Dodge doesn't give you any hassle when it needs to be done, and then you'll be good to go for a long long time...at least until your alternator burns up!:surprise:

I’m new to the forum. I only found it due to experiencing the same issue and doing a google search. This thread was right on the money. Saved me a lot of time and money. My car is in the shop and should be finished today. I just want to say thank you to all that commented.

Hey my 2011 charger hemi 5.7 gives me the number 2 cylinder permanent code and it's missing...does that apply to v8 as well as the v6 engines?
