Well today was my first time EVER having my Charger R/T in the snow and my first time ever driving a rear wheel drive only vehicle in the snow lol. It wasn't too bad and we had about an inch of snow on the roads but when I hit ice there was NOTHING I could do and I was very glad I was only going 5 mph cause I was turning at an intersection. I am also glad no one was on the road cause it was 1:30 A.M and I just got off work. I really don't think the fact that I still have summer tires on my car helped me out either lol. But to be honest it wasn't too bad although the back end did get a little swirly, but that was mostly when I was trying to get going from a stop light. At one light my back end literally started to go side ways as soon as I gave it just the slightest amount of gas and I am glad I know how to get by in the snow and I was able to just let off and find a point of traction. For now on I am going to check the weather BEFORE going to work and if there is any predicted snow I will take the front wheel drive vehicle with all season tires =)

yeah...summer tires in snow and ice aren't a good idea. the conti extremecontacts I have on mine have performed about as well as a non-winter rated tire could....

The independent rear suspension is what allows both tires to spin on snow since we have open differentials. A solid axle car would have just spun the passenger side tire. I added posi-traction to my 1992 Camaro and had to work the emergency brake at a light on snow or ice or it would spin into the next lane just sitting there even with my foot on the brake.

If your going to use these cars as your daily driver in the winter, at the very least a good set of all seasons is recommended. Having a back up car like you do, it might not be necessary. Although if your driving your Charger even when the roads are clear the summer only tires are still not good. They just don't stick and your stopping power in an emergency situation is decreased by a lot because of the cold road surface and summer tread compound.

The best case would be to get dedicated snow tires and rims. I've been getting by on my all seasons but there are times when I think I should just get snow tires and rims.

I am diffidently getting snow tires and some cheap rims to go with it next year. I wasn't even planning on driving it in the snow this year and it started to snow when I was at work lol. Also the reason why I didn't already have a set of snow tires is cause I bought the car not even a month ago and I though for sure the snow was done and gone but I guess I was wrong lol....good news is the forecast for the next 10 days is sunny but cold. To be honest I really don't even want to drive this car in snow but I knew I had no choice at that point lol.

The car is not that bad in the snow. The traction control does very well and if left to do its job you will typically not have any issues.

I suggest you get nice wheels for the car for non-winter use. Then use your stock wheels for snow tires. That's what I did but sadly I have yet to put on the snow tires since DC area hasn't seen snow in 2 season! Grrrr!

I have a 2008 se.... the word " Death Trap", doesnt explain the terror while driving in nyc in anything more than 2in of snow. . Jeez!

What engine do you have? Does your car even have traction control?

Some of the early SE Chargers didn't and they were nightmares to drive in slick conditions.

I got stuck going slightly uphill getting into a traffic circle. couldn't go anywhere. Genuinely stuck. When I took off the traction control, I got out of there like a bat out of hell. I'm sure I must have confused the heII out of the people behind me wondering how I couldn't move for a good minute, then just taking off.

Good winter tires (not all-seasons) with the stock 18'' wheels - probably the best purchase for our RWD cars.
Using the Charges as daily driver. Will not say, that the car will handle any depth of the snow, but handling is good and fishtailing is predictable.
Weak points - ice (and here I believe it same for all cars) and starting movement uphill in the snow.
Didn't like the increased fuel consumption these snowy days.

And: careful (doesn't means extremely slow) driving is the key.

I bought a set of cheap 18" wheels and full winter tires. They are lots out there, I have Firestone Winterforce tires and they have carried the car through my 75 mile round trip commute these last two winters (last year was 85+" of snow here) without much issue.

With the traction control, ABS and all that, it is very predictable to drive.

My first car was a 79 Olds Cutlass RWD with Dunlop G/T qualifier tires... that was a LOT harder to control... going, turning, and stopping LOL

Any recommendations for snow tires on the factory 20's 245/45/20?
I've been looking into this a bit for the Scat Pack I've got on order. From what I've seen there are very few choices in a 245/45r20. However, if you go to a 275/40r20 there are several options available, with the Blizzaks being preferred (based on Tirerack reviews). What I don't know is if you'll need a small spacer for the fronts to prevent wheel rub from moving to a wider tire.

And yes, I'm aware that a wider tire is generally not recommended for snow, but it seems to be a necessity to get a decent tire in this case.

I can't argue with that very much. Getting a tire specifically designed for snow will certainly give you better snow performance than one that isn't...even if it is a little wider than might be ideal for the application.

Besides, they make it in that size for a reason and it isn't because it simply fits. :)

IDK if any spacer would be required since you are using the factory wheel offset.

Nokian WRG3's are available in 275/40R20....and if you're careful there's aftermarket 18's and 19's that will clear the pre-2015 SRT8 brakes, which I believe the scat pack still has....

well, I think my car is still months away, and next winter is even further... but I just placed an order at discount tire direct as I couldn't pass up the deal. I still think the Blizzaks would be a better tire, but went with Michelin Latitude X-Ice Xi2 as the price match I got sweetened the deal.

wheels with 275/40r20s mounted, balanced and shipped for $1080 after rebate
