Searched for a while and couldn't find much info on changing oil for our Chargers. The word oil* is too common :slap:

I'm getting ready to change my oil soon for the first time. The car isn't brand new but it's my first time changing the oil. What all do we need in regards to tools, parts? I'm going with Mobil 1.

I thought this could be a nice thread for those who haven't changed their oil yet. I don't mind getting my oil changed by wal mart or valvoline but I want to work on my car.

Thanks for the input!

Rags
Socket set
Oil filter wrench that fits into socket
Pan to drain oil
Bucket to store old oil for recycling
Bottles of new oil
New oil filter
Ramps that don't gouge the front bumper. I use a *jack instead
Creeper
Trouble light
Radio
Beer
Funnel....for the oil not the beer

I always log the engine miles and hours after each oil change.

*After draining the majority of the oil I slowly lower the car to let the very last bit of out.

Thats all my Friday fried brain can think of.

For ramps, the black Rhino Ramps just barely clear my front spoiler when I get it up on there for an oil change.

when you unthread the oil filter-the threaded stud that the oil filter thread's on to can some times unthread it self out of the motor block. since your car is older and has had other oil changes then agter you get the oil filter off check the filter stud by turning it counter clock wise to make sure it's threaded all the way into the block. it has a stoper on it so you cant thread it up into the block to far. last time i changed my oil the filter stud came out of the block still threaded into the filter.

you need to make sure that the rubber gasket comes off with the old one because sometimes it will stay on and you will lose your oil real fast. so check to see if it comes off with the old one

Just a note also - if you are changing your own oil, its a good time to rotate your tires.

Huh? I have probably done several thousand oil changes in my life. That has never happened to me. That's a new one.

I know one thing. Nobody that works for Walmart's auto "service" will EVER touch my car.

What is it 10mm for the air dam thing and 13? for the oil plug? You can't miss the ones to remove for the air damn, they have arrows pointing them out.

Make sure you have enough oil.

you've driven a lot of miles, LOL

I've only done a few dozen oil changes and it's never happened to me either :)

Heh. My family owned a service station and performance shop from the late 30's until my dad retired and sold it a few years back. So...as with any family business....every day after school, every summer, and on and off throughout college that's where you'd find me. Fun, eh? :)

+1! I did this on a bike and wound up with several quarts of Mobil 1 on the garage floor. What a mess!

Hehe, I think we've all done this at least once. After that kind of mess you're a lot more likely to confirm the gasket comes off with the old filter in the future.
