Hi everyone. I have come across a Charger R/T that was fully straight piped, no cats. I LOVE the way it sounds. I am currently running no mufflers and resos on my 2014 R/T. I am interested in taking off the cats. I know this will throw codes for O2 sensors. This will be a problem during emissions here in Illinois I am assuming and we just have the OBDII emission test.

With that being said my question for you all is what would my options be if I took the cats off and wanted to pass the test?

Thank you

Put them back on in enough time for the car to pass the emissions test?

First you gut the cats so they won't restrict anything but will still pass a visual inspection to see if they are still there (or buy "dummy" cats that look real but are straight piped inside).

Second, you buy an O2 sensor simulator kit like this to bypass the O2 sensors so that the PCM still operates normally and no codes are thrown...

Appreciate this. Thank you.

Get yourself a set of oxygen sensor spacers. They'll move the O2 sensor out of the exhaust stream, thus keeping them from throwing a catalyst inefficiency CEL.

HPTuners is your friend for passing Illinois emissions when missing all the emissions equipment. I pulled into a testing center (my old GTO) and the guy laughed that I thought I'd pass. I passed with flying colors and he couldn't understand.

You'll get some "breaking federal law" BS warnings when disabling the emissions stuff, but you can do it and pass worry free. You don't have to worry about visual inspections either as Illinois doesn't do them if you pass the OBD II test, but gut the cats if you want to be safe. All you'll have to worry about is getting pulled over for loud exhaust.

Okay gotcha. Let me ask you this since I have yet to take a car for a test.

If I gut the cats all I need to do is get rid of the check engine on my dash to pass correct? So once they scan they wont see any codes being thrown?

I think I am either going to get a custom tune or the O2 spacers that were mentioned earlier in this thread.

Thank you :)

Yes and no, you'll need to get rid of the trigger of the light, just turning the light off won't stop the code from being read. It's been a long time since I did it (2005), but HPTuners should give you a few choices, like just not activating the light to removing the the code it self. When you disable/remove the code, the software will warn you twice its illegal, but you can still do it.

I went from a MAF tune to a SD tune and I needed to throw the "MAF not ready" code to put my car in SD mode, but it still passed. That code, we just turned off the light. Since our chargers are already speed density, you shouldn't even have that problem. If you don't have access to HPTuners, there are plenty of shops in the Chicago area that can professionally tune the car and you just need to let them know you need to pass emissions.

The nice thing about Illinois is how old and stupid their system is and the system doesn't check for codes that "should be there", it only checks for what your car tells it, so if your car tells Illinois' system that your car is OK and all systems are ready, you pass.

I think I am going to take it to a shop in Chicago and have them tune it for me to pass when the time comes. Any recommendations on shops?

Thank you for all your help.
