I got a call, yesterday, from SRTBEE (John). He has been wanting to paint his calipers and SRT letters on his BEE, but hasn't had the time. Well John is off this week and I gave my crews the short work week off, so we both had time to get-r-done. Plus we both had cabin fever and modding was the perfect cure for that.
We took FreebirdSRT and went and got the Duplicolor (Yellow) brake caliper brush paint kit (Autozone). With only one Yellow offered for the caliper paint, it was a very close match. Plus we got some yellow spray paint for the SRT letters, on the Charger wheels.
So we got to work and figured since the rear calipers are smaller, we would remove both rear tires and do both of the calipers, at the same time.
Since I had already painted the SRT letters on my wheels. John got to painting the calipers and I went to work on his wheels. That is why the back end of the Bee has a drop cloth on it. We don't need to get any over spray, on the Bee.
I found an easier way to paint the letters than to cut out each letter with an exacto blade. I run the tape close to the edge of each letter.
Then I take a drop cloth and cut a space big enough to go around the SRT letters. Lay the cloth over the wheel and tape the cloth to the border of the SRT letters. (protects the rest of the wheel from getting any paint on it)
Now it's ready for primer, then let it dry. Yellow paint, then let it dry. Clear coat, then let dry.
I used mother nature (SUN) to speed up the drying process, in between the various coats.
Here John snapped a pic of the Bird at work. We put another drop cloth on Mrs. Bee's 300C. Don't want to get yellow paint on a Brilliant Black 3C.
From trial and error. John found that you should use the small brush, that comes with the caliper paint kit, for tighter, smaller areas. Get a bigger, better quality brush, for the bigger areas of the calipers. John had a brush, in his garage, so no extra trip to the store.
Tape off the areas you do not want to get paint on, around the caliper.
We ran out of light yesterday, see the picture of me painting above. So we put the rear wheels back on, for the night. Here you can see the rear caliper painted and the SRT letters painted, but the SRT letter edges are not cleaned up yet. I will go back with a rag and paint thinner and clean up the over spray on the letters edges.
Today, John went to work on the bigger front brembo caliper. While I painted the SRT letters on the front wheel, that was removed.
When the caliper paint drys it looks like it was powder coated. Looks great.
While I was waiting for the paint to dry on the wheel and it was a such beautiful day. I gave SRT II a quick bath.
John found a print & graphics shop near his house and while we were waiting for the paint to dry. The graphics company e-mailed various samples of what John and I were discussing, for John to sign off on and print them. So we took SRT II and went and picked up the various caliper designs, from the graphics shop.
SRT BEE, SUPER BEE, #948 BEE
Of the 3 designs, the SRT BEE was done with the stock SRT letters. We felt that design looked best on the caliper, since the wheel also has the stock SRT letters (going with a theme).
Some might ask. No, the entire caliper was not painted. You do not see the back side of the caliper when the wheels is on, so no need to paint it.
So we had extra SUPER BEE and #948 BEE design's left over. I felt the fender Bee emblems were missing something and John agreed. This turned out saweet.
Passenger fender emblem
Driver fender emblem
Caliper and fender emblem with graphics installed.
Well that left the #948 BEE graphics. We both thought this was a good place to put one of them.
The one on the trunk lid.
Front wheel/caliper all put back together again.
I will post the finished product soon....stay tuned.
