You have most likely fried the wires from the alternator/battery to the ammeter gauge. On these old Mopars all the current runs through the ammeter gauge and the quick disconnect at the firewall gets hot and melts. You need to do the "MADD wiring upgrade" to fix it (see part 2 on the second page):

I do this to every old Mopar I touch (and believe me its a lot) and it works better than anything else.

If your ammeter is not already burned up and the wire ends in the junction box at the firewall have not overheated and melted (yours sounds too far gone though), then you can just run one thick 8 guage wire from the battery stud on the back of the alternator to the starter relay (use a fusible link on the relay end). This will take most of the load off the gauge and keep things running trouble free for a long time.
