I have a 2007 3.5 SE with 108,000 miles. I’ve been reading a lot of other posts that 3.5’s have a common ticking problem related to bad rocker arm assemblies/ lifters. However, from what I understand, the ticking usually occurs during startup and typically goes away after the engine warms up. The ticking from my engine is only heard while accelerating and in gear. I cannot duplicate the ticking while in park and revving the engine, so I am unable to pinpoint where it is coming from. The ticking does not go away when the engine is warm, and I don’t believe it gets louder or faster as I accelerate. Anybody else experienced this? It is rather loud and very noticeable, I will try and get a video of it later today.

Update: I made a youtube video here: http://youtu.be/1jX3haQl3o0

The ticking seems to slightly get louder and faster as I accelerate, but as soon as I lift my foot off the pedal, the ticking stops. Anybody that had bad rocker arm assemblies, could you notice the ticking while in park with the engine idling? Was it a constant ticking, or did it go away after the car warmed up? I noticed the ticking right after I replaced my spark plugs, PCV valve, and EGR valve. I went back and made sure everything was connected (including the egr tube and blue seal) and torqued to the proper specs, so I'm sort of at a loss of what is causing the tick.

ACES IV would help solve your engine tick. PM 370 HEMI and check out the BND AUTOMOTIVE ROLL CALL thread.

hey
from what your describing that's what my car is doing as well its the lifters.
Mine doesn't go away when it warms up but just gets quieter because the oil is pumping through pull up beside a building or go down an alley roll your window down and you will hear it.
i am going to replace both sides probably this summer or sooner depending on the place i go to for warranty

Ok, I just ordered both sets of rocker arm assemblies p/n 04892293AC. I'm also going to replace the valve cover gaskets and intake manifold gasket while I'm at it. Hopefully all of the parts arrive this week so I can work on it this weekend. Keeping my fingers crossed that this solves the ticking problem.

From what I can hear, it sounds like you have some worn lifters in the engine. When that happens, the extra pressure of acceleration will allow a slight amount of bleed down and give you clearance that resonates as a ticking sound. Once you are off the gas the lifters can "catch up" and provide closing of the clearance and keep it quiet again. I would suggest you call me when you can and we can do a custom blend QuantumBlue which will give you more cushion and resist the bleed down much better.;)

Brian

Ok so over the weekend, I replaced both rocker arm assemblies. The ticking sounded like it was coming from the passenger side originally, and when I looked at the part, it was discolored like it was burnt. The driver’s side looked fine, but I replaced it anyways so that both sides would be new. I started it up, and the ticking was much louder!!! This time, it sounded like it was coming from the driver’s side. I am 100% positive I installed and torqued everything correctly, but the ticking was very loud and sounded like metal knocking around in there. I decided to put the original one back on the driver’s side to try and determine which side the noise was coming from. Started it up again and immediately heard the ticking, but it went away after the engine warmed up. It is much quieter than it was before while driving, but is still noticeable. I’m hoping that a new oil change may help out. I guess I will continue to drive it as is and hope that the ticking does not get louder, otherwise I’ll have to end up taking it to the dealer. Could the new rocker arm that I put on the driver’s side be bad? Or could there be a bigger problem?

I got it figured out. One of the lifters was stuck on the new rocker arm assembly which was causing the loud knocking noise. Replaced it with another one, and now their is no more ticking noise!
