I noticed recently that my car ticks quite loudly on cold starts. I am aware of the notorious hemi tick, however this seems much louder than normal. I would appreciate any input that anyone has. It's 17 Scat with just over 12k miles on it. At this point, I am honestly ready to give up on the car. The car has already been to the dealer about 4 times for various issues and now I have posted on here multiple times about the various problems I've been having with it. FCA has to do better

I have the same sound when I cold start my 2017 Scat Pack. My car sits a lot, it only has 2700 miles it. The last cold start had two weeks between starts and even then I only drove it because the rust on the brakes looked awful. I believe the tick is normal.

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback! The rust gets awful with these cars. If let mine sit for a few days, I can notice it

When the rotors are rusted, do you have any noise when braking?

That is definitely the Hemi Tick. Lack of detergent in the oil and no cushion for the valves as they hit the valve seats.

As you have seen before. ACES IV and QuantumBlue 7.5w40 HP Competition Racing Engine Oil For your 6.4L Hemi V8 will address this.

I can say that Brians oil and Aces do quiet the hemi tick. Mobil 1, tick, Quantum, no tick along with Aces.

Now just for reference, I use Brians oil in my Seadoo, that revs to 8600 RPM and puts out over 300 hp out of little 3 cylinder. The cool part is this is a 2004 ski, with a lot of addons to get to that. I did a full teardown after over 200 hrs at very high rpm and loads and NOTHING and I mean nothing showed any wear. All the bearing were as new, Cam was at new spec on journals and lobes. Cylinders still showed crosshatch. Valve guides need no work. Valve seats were fine.
It runs a blend he designed for it along with the Aces 4 fuel additive.

The hemi will never see those loads or RPM's, but it nice to know the oil is not the weak link.

Am i biased, sure, cause his product proved itself to me and I am the biggest skeptic there is.

It may sound normal to you but it doesn't have to be and won't be with our materials. Get some real lubricity in the upper cylinders of that engine and cushion down the valves and it will quiet down significantly. ;)

There is a thread identical to this on the Durango forums about this tick. Although his is pretty loud in comparison, it might just be how it was recorded. He found it was the studs on the exhaust manifold that were causing the issue. Apparently there were some that were broke.

I don't have the ticking noise in my 5.7L Durango, or my 6.4L Charger, but I have heard it before on other Hemi's. I haven't investigated where exactly the noise was coming from on the Hemi's I've heard, but might be worth listening to near the manifold.

So like here, they were are also being told this is "normal", and not to worry about from the dealers.

Here is the link I am referring to:

There are times where you do get a ticking from the exhaust manifold or in this case the short headers. The sound that is being made in this video is not exhaust manifold sound but valve and lifter sounds. I also hear a little piston slap when I put my headphones on. This is the things we discussed addressing with our materials. :wink3:

Very interesting, I will definitely try and listen near the exhaust manifold and see if i hear it any louder. Thanks for sharing that link, I actually suspect that's what's going on with my car. Sounds very similar to what I am experiencing. Once it warms up, it doesn't tick as bad, but you can still hear it at times. I have a case open with FCA and an appointment with the dealer in 2 weeks. I'll definitely report back

Hi king_lare,
We understand how this could be frustrating and would like to offer our help should you choose to visit your dealer to have this looked into. Please send us a private message if this is something you are interested in.

Just to update everyone, took it to the dealer and they argued with me that the noise was normal (Complete BS). Now I am having other issues with the car holding alignment. I have pretty much just given up on it at this point
