I've got a 2006 3.5 Charger, (bad motor) and I've bought a 2008 3.5 donor charger for the motor and trans. I'm now seeing that the 06 is a one year engine and the 08 engine is not listed as a replacement engine. Does anyone know the differences in these, and can the 08 engine/trans be made to work in the 06?

If needed I have the complete (Police) donor car but not real happy with a complete wiring harness/control modules swap out.

Any ideas or direction would be appreciated.

The engines should be the same, I’m not sure what is incompatible between the two. Do they visually look identical?

The transmissions may be different (A4 vs A5) and maybe that’s the difference in the two engines that makes them unable to swap back and forth. Can you confirm the trans types for each engine and see if they are different?

If the trans is different on the 06 there is the possibility the torque converter is different. I would swap the flex plates on the engines just to be safe. Additionally the “late build” cars have a slightly different electrical control system. I believe late 06 and up. The bare engine should be the same.

Well, as it turned out I was lucky, I did a complete swap, engine and trans together.
The only thing that was really different on the engine itself was the cam sensor and the cam sensor mounting hole. I had to use the sensor from the 06 (wrong plug) so I had to sand the body of the sensor down to fit the smaller mounting hole, drill and tap another retaining bolt hole for the sensor, and finally added a .030" spacer under the sensor retaining bolt to get it off the cam wheel. I also used the 06 crankshaft sensor on the transmission bell housing due to the wiring plug.
I also used the intake from the 06 for wiring issues also.
The car runs great, exceptionally strong, and mileage appears to be over 20 mpg.

Thanks for the update, that’s good info about the sensors and plenum wiring differences. I was wondering if the plenum might be different (pre-‘09 having and extra Short Runner valve), but thought that was probably only for the minivan 3.5Ls.

Anyway, this same question has come up several times between the ChallengerTalk forum and here, so I’ll make mental note there are some diffencea in the external engine sensors and plenum for the next time I pipe up on a thread like this.
