April 6 GPS Reset

A word of warning to anyone that disconnects their battery at this point. I'm not sure what years are affected but the battery in my 2011 R/T died yesterday. Without warning and with no previous issues, I got in to start it and it just clicked. All of the electrical/electronic devices were behaving strangely. As the car is 8 years old I assumed the battery and bought a replacement. The car started fine and everything reset. I noticed the clock was 4 hours off. I was hoping it would pick up the GPS time and correct itself but when it did not do so after a couple of starts I began researching the situation and remembered seeing that there was a GPS reset (that supposedly affected devices greater than 10 years old). I see this happened 10 days prior to this incident. It would appear the you are likely to be unaffected until you lose battery power to the GPS. Once you do, it defaults to August of 1999. I can set the time manually but not the date. I'm not yet sure how bad this is but I'm not pleased as I expect the reply from Dodge is going to be buy a newer car. Maybe if enough folks complain they will release a software update? If anyone knows who it would be ideal to complain to I would appreciate that information.

Don't assume because you have not seen it that you are not affected and do not disconnect your battery for a test unless you are willing to live with the results that may never be fixed.

--Ok, can the firmware be updated on a 2011? I see many references to firmware such as CTP13 and higher. Can these be used to update, and if so, does anyone think it will fix the date issue?

I assume the original as the Chrysler site has never published an official update on the site. The version says CTP 2011 followed by Software Version 3.10.

Gonna answer my own question on the update as I went ahead and tried it. Looks like a no go. It spent a few minutes "validating update files" and then dumped out of it. Time and date still wrong.

Since this is a rollover issue, the firmware needing update is in the GPS receiver itself. Likely these vehicles depend on a NMEA data stream with correct UTC time - calculations for that are all done in the GPS receiver.
Any idea where the GPS antenna connects on these cars? The "radio" itself, or maybe some external module - like the original OnStar. If the receiver module can - the thing actually putting out the serial data - be gotten to, maybe there's hope of flashing it, or if you can't, maybe feed downstream with a different GPS module. Again, it's likely that updating the car "radio" doesn't flash the GPS.

I wonder if the car just needs enough time to download a new almanac from the satellites.

Not sure. I see nobody else complaining of this so I am still hoping there is a resolution.
