Is 89 Octane really necessary?

In the manual it states, 89 octane is for optimum performance. 87 is acceptable.

While not a huge difference, I've noticed that my mileage is slightly better with 89 octane.

There is a bare minimum difference.... I noticed maybe 1-2 extra mpg. The thing is i didn't run it for long so maybe something could be different on the inside I don't know

If you guys are seeing 2mpgs less with 87...lets call that 5% less, assuming ~20mpg's.
You much better off spending the extra $.10 for the 89. Less than a 5% difference

I normally run 89 in mine but last two fill ups I put 87 in it with the gas prices going up. I can honestly say I notice that my engine runs alot smoother on 89 than on 87. My morning start it seems to idle rougher with 87. Will put 89 back in her next fill up. Didnt notice any milage difference, worse or better. Seems to get the same based on my driving habbits.

I never noticed a difference. I always get 87.

It's better to burn out than to fade away

I have been experimenting with gas here in SoCal since I bought my charger a few months ago.

93 octane seems to net me about 2 mpg over 89, and 89 is about 1.5 mpg more than 87.

I am wondering if the lower octane is making the engine detonate but the ECU pulls back timing, so in turn I give it more gas to make up for the "loss" in power.

Just my .002
