Strangely enough, I thought I got the tip to use that combination from this very site a long time ago...
Some viruses are definitely hardwired to take over Exploder, to the extent that they'll do that even if loaded though FF.
If you're lucky enough to get one so new that you cannot remove it through a killer, then you can usually manually edit things out of your registry to fix it. If you edit out too much, then all of your Microsoft products might lose their registration info and keep giving you annoying messages, which happened to me about a year ago, so be careful with that approach...
