Check engine light is on

There I was, cruising with my new mods installed, enjoying the throaty rumble of the JBA headers and catbacks, when all of a sudden, I hear a "ding". I look at my instrument panel and the Check Engine light is illuminated. I had travelled about 60 miles in total when that unwelcomed light turned on. What the heck is that all about? I called the shop that installed the system and they are not open agian until Monday. Suggestions?

Re: Check engine light is on

toggle the key between off and on with out starting three times and the EVIC will show you the code.
It may be a loose gas cap.

Checked the cap... it was tight. Did the ignition 3 times on and off thing and didn't see any "code" in the EVIC. BUT.. I did notice the EVIC displaying an ever increasing fuel consumption ratio, while the car was idling, staionary in my garage. When I turned the engine off, it was up to 60.9 litres per 100 km. When the engine was off, it was still climbing. What does that mean? Other than something is FUBAR.

Re: Check engine light is on

You might not have done the key thing right. ON equals just far enough that the warning indicators come on. OFF equals just far enough back that they all go off. This must be done quickly, 3-4 seconds. Start with the key OFF.

1. Key ON
2. Key OFF
3. Key ON
4. Key OFF
5. Key ON and wait a few seconds.

Down in the EVIC, you should see either a code like P0300 (not that one, thats a multi cylinder misfire code) but a letter and four numbers.

Or, you could see dONE. But, if you do it right, you WILL see something.

Good point, if done correctly it will display "-------" for a few seconds and then "--done--" if there are no codes.

Well, after about 10 tries, the odometer went to dotted lines and this appeared. P0420. thanks GLHS for your help. NOw if I can just decipher what that means?

Re: Check engine light is on

Thats an O2 sensor fault. Not sure which side. I think 420 is passenger side, 430 is driver side
