Ok, so I haven't had much luck with painting, but I decided to add some color to the interior. So I picked up some vinyl from the local flea market at one of the many car sign decal vendors and decided to roll my own. So, with some patience, I give you vinyl covered steering wheel inserts.
The two lower inserts can be removed by lifting the lower end of the insert and pulling them away from the airbag. You do not need to unbolt the center airbag unit to get to them.
However, before I had found the thread above, I thought I could get out the upper inserts as well. This was not the case, you MUST remove the center cover. So there is a little damage to the right hand spoke.
Ok, covering the lower inserts was easy. But to cover the upper ones, you have to remove the buttons. This was so that I could roll the vinyl over the edges. If you do not, it is impossible to get the vinyl far enough inside the button opening. The buttons were going to hit the edge of the vinyl, so I decided they had to come out for the install.
You can easily pry the four small clips and remove the circuit board assembly.
However, removing the black buttons from the white rockers inside is a tougher task. There are four small clips on each white rocker. You WILL break at least one insert slot on each of the black buttons. I managed to only break one on each one, so the other three still worked fine to hold the buttons in place afterwards.
Here are close ups of the buttons.
Here are the white rockers once the buttons are removed. Then it was easy to put the vinyl on and cut the opening and roll the edges.
Pics of things afterwards. As usual the Plum Crazy color varies widly, but I can guarantee you it is a perfect match.
I have a silly question. Since it's vinyl, do you have to take the inserts out or can't you just apply the vinyl on them on the steering wheel? I've always wanted to do this mod, but didn't have the nerve to take the wheel apart. If I could just put the vinyl directly on, that would be fantastic!
Your not done, gauge rings, nav. bezel, shift crome ring thing
looks awsome.
Thx. The gauge rings will probably be next.
I tried to do the bezel around the nav-radio-A/C but there so so many combination curves and openings I wasn't able to do the vinyl in one piece. To do the nav and the shifter bezel I'd have to do some creative seaming to hide them as much as I can.
Awesome mod and nice job. PC cars should've come this way
