I ask myself all the times when i see a pic about hemi engine with a catch can instaled. Is that really good for the engine life? If yes, why doesnt it factory setup? Somebody has a good explanation about? Thanks
Why don’t the auto manufacturers incorporate catch cans? Cost and the added maintenance is something that would NOT be accepted by the general market (even though it is as simple as draining the can at each oil change).
Yep. It doesn't hurt, it might help...but, you don't need it.
It looks good under the hood, SRT engineers said that removing a little bit of oil vapor isn't a bad thing and if it makes you happy to have one...go for it! They also said repeatedly that you don't need one to get full performance from the engine, otherwise they would have installed one.
Difference with CAI and Catch Can is the CC can provide proof of it's usefulness when you find oil in the can. A CAI MIGHT show some HP increase, but who knows the truth of how much dirt it's letting thru.
This is from my very first oil change on a 2016 R/T.. Now this is also non synthetic that the factory puts in (I changed to full synthetic) but this gives you an idea of what is blowing back through your intake.. I also emptied out the standing oil before the pic about .5 of an oz or so.
Here's the thing you have to understand about Catch Cans. The main reason that people use them is separating the vaporous oil, combustion byproduct and moisture from getting back into the intake as we all know.
Oil is the heaviest of the three followed by moisture and the lightest gasoline byproduct.
The oil volatility/reactivity to heat (as your engine acts like a miniature refinery) goes from liquid under heat to vapor and then travels up the PCV tube....giving off latent heat.....condensing back into a liquid and then into the intake, burned and out the exhaust. This also condenses on the back of the throttle blade once the car is shut off. It actually plates the inside.
What you are really looking for is the highest vapor threshold/least volatile oil you can buy so that the oil stays liquid to temperatures that are above what your engine can produce. If the oil stays oil and not liquid, the catch can will have virtually nothing but water and fuel byproduct, carbon and very very small silicates.
Dino oil off the shelf has typically 32 to 35 % reactivity so in a 7 quart system you can potentially out gas 2.45 quarts of oil into the intake/catch can...emptying it constantly.
Typical synthetics have about 15% reactivity...which while better than dino....will stlll give a 7 quart system 33.6 oz...just over a quart into the catch can....emptying it less than dino but still a lot.
QuantumBlue is 1.5% to 3% reactive so in a 7 quart oil system....you are looking at 6.72 oz. or 7 oz.....which is a lot less than 2.45 quarts or 1 quart etc.
Having more of your oil in the crankcase and oil galleys instead of your catch can or intake manifold will still leave your engine cleaner with much less if any deposits on the throttle blade.:beerchug:
I think that Dodge could void your warranty for modifying the motor. While we all might agree that it isn't a problem if regularly emptied, if it were to get full or installed incorrectly that's something very different.
In 6.5k on sync oil on the 392 I consume no measurable oil that the dip stick can reflect. I also consume no oil when pushing the car. In prior cars I'd consume 1/2 to 1 qt on a track day due to crank case venting.
This begs the question, how have you all broken your motors in? Did you baby it or did you break it properly?
I'd skip the catch can unless you like useless mods to show off at car shows
I got mine last year and 3 weeks later when I checked it I had 1/3 of a can full of oil in there. Do you NEED it? No. Is it helpful? Sure. Is it doing something life altering? Not really. But I do like getting that oil before it gets back in there, even if the engine is designed to handle it.
