2014 RT AWD Whining Noise

I am new to the forums and I just picked up a 2014 RT AWD. I am really enjoying it despite having a whining noise that is present when the AWD engages. The noise/whine is most pronounced under light throttle when the trans shifts between 1st and 2nd. The noise is also present at different times, but it is intermittent. When the AWD turns off, the noise goes away.

I searched online for other owners that have encountered a similar issue, but only found 1 thread. Since I am a new member and unable to attach the direct YouTube link demonstrating the noise I am having, the name of the clip is "Odd Noise - 2014 Dodge Charger R/T" (clip is not my car, but the whining is the same as what I am experiencing).

If you have experienced this issue or have an idea what the issue is and a suggestion for the potential fix, I would really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks in advance for the help!

My 2010 RT AWD was doing that when I first bought it one year ago but it has since gone away. I have no idea what was causing it but it was high pitch and not very loud. It wasn't irritating at all, just very curious. It almost sounded like the sound a small electric motor might make when it's not getting enough voltage. Like the sound an RC car might make. OK now I just sound crazy, lol.

Thanks for the reply. My car only has 22K miles, so it has me a bit concerned. I took it to the dealer to have them check it out, but they said the noise was normal when the AWD is engaging. There is no way that can be normal. Problem is, i never heard it when I bought the car since the temp was 40 + and in RWD mode where the noise is not present.

Moons:
I don't see on your post where you hail from, but here in SW Ohio we have been at or under 39 degrees a fair amount since I brought home my '14 R/T AWD in late October. I have not heard the sound you describe with the AWD on or off. I am interested though in how your issue plays out in the event that mine starts to do it.

You have plenty of the 5 year 100K powertrain warranty left, so no worries there. I recommend maintaining polite but firm pressure on your dealer to continue to investigate the issue. I recall seeing one other Charger owner here who had the issue, and I believe his issue was resolved by replacing the transfer case.

What color is yours, and what options does it have?

N8ECH - I live in SE Michigan so like yourself, the car has been pretty much in AWD constantly due to the cold weather. I took it to the dealer today and they heard the whining, but ultimately did not know how to fix it. The said if it gets louder bring it back and we will try to diagnose the issue then. Not really an acceptable response in my book.

My Charger is a base RT AWD in Silver

Check out this thread: http://www.chargerforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=243018. I had the same noise as the OP of that thread (only in AWD of course) and the dealer wound up replacing most of the front drivetrain before it turned out to be a wheel bearing making noise under load.

One of my posts in that thread has a star case number you could give your dealer to look up.

Thanks for the reply. Yes - I read that entire thread before posting (hoping you would chime in) and actually referenced it at the dealer today stating that another owner on the Charger forum with a similar issue ultimately fixed the issue by replacing the passenger side wheel hub. Is the wheel bearing part of the wheel hub assembly or a different part? Did you replace only the front passenger side? (the whine appears to be resonating from the front passenger side).

The dealer said the bearings looked fine and would not replace it since if it did not resolve the issue Chrysler would not pay them for the part. I understand thier position, but just saying the we hear the noise, but we don't know how to fix it is unacceptable. I challenged them and said if you replace the wheel hub and it fixes the issue, you can claim it under warranty. If it doesn't, I will eat the cost which the dealer said would be $387. I am tempted to take the gamble. Also, good suggestion giving them the STAR case number.

Them not paying for it if it doesn't fix it sounds like a crock of shit if you ask me (assuming you're still under warranty). I'd say you might want to find another dealer or get some higher powers involved in that case. Dodgecares might be able to help with that one.

Anyway, the wheel bearing is part of the hub assembly. The old one exhibited no signs of failure/damage like you'd normally get from a wheel bearing (no slop, no noise when turning, etc). After taking with the tech that worked on it and the service manager at the dealer, the best idea the three of us could come up with was that it being under load from the CV axle was putting stress on it that it doesn't see when just freewheeling in RWD. They started by just replacing the passenger's side hub/bearing and if that wouldn't have taken care of it they were going to replace the other side too, but several months and several thousand miles later and I'm still good.

This conversation spurred me to look at my glovebox warranty book. I do not see mention of wheel bearings under the powertrain warranty section. Since he has 8 months of the 3/36 left though, he should be good to go there.

Andrea at Dodgecares could not locate the STAR case number you game me. Could you please look at your paperwork again? Andrea said usually the STAR cases begin with 6.

The dealer will not replace the wheel hub without the supporting case number as they state it is not damaged.

Thanks!

I don't have a copy of the invoice from them replacing the transfer case, but I do have the ones from the first time when they replace the diff and axle and the last time when they replaced the hub.

The owner connect site shows the transfer case on there, but no additional info.

I'm sure if whatever dealer you've been going to (maybe it's time for a new one with how bullheaded they're being) needed more information, the people at my dealer (ask for Warren or Patrick) would be happy to talk to them.

Great, info! Much appreciated! This is my second dealer - the first said the noise was normal... Anyways, current dealer acknowledges noise is not normal, but doesn't know what is causing it. Hopefully Andrea can help push the replacement of the wheel hub with the info you provided. If not, it is on to dealer #3 ! The option they gave me of wait until it gets worse and bring it back is not acceptable. My luck is the noise will get worse after my warranty is up which will leave me stuck with the bill for an issue identified previously.

Update..

Dealer acknowledged whining noise is present in AWD, under light throttle at approximately 21 MPH. Dealer engaged STAR team and decided to replace passenger wheel hub. Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue. The STAR team requested dealer test like vehicle. Coincidentally, the dealer had a 2014 dodger charger RT AWD, the exact same model as mine. Dealer confirmed that the same issue was present on other vehicle. Chryster STAR tech stated that since the issue is present on 2 like vehicles, it must be performing as designed.

I advised Dodge Cares (Andrea) that I am not satisfied with this response and case is being escalated.

For those that have a Hemi AWD Charger, are you able to duplicate this noise under the conditions I noted above? I find it hard to believe that Chrysler would design an AWD system that makes a whining noise.

I look forward to your comments.

Mine has recently had the noise come back, so apparently it wasn't the hub. It seems like it's worst when it's cold outside and seems to make the noise the loudest when you let off the gas between 55 & 45 mph.

At this point, I would think you would want to drive it as much as possible. That way, hopefully the issue worsens and gets to the point they cannot ignore it. Do you have a good bit of warranty left?

I made a trip to the dealer this past week and the service manager (new since the last time I tried to get this fixed) heard the car making noise, and it supposed to be getting in contact with corporate again.

Has anyone heard this on an SXT AWD? Or has it just been R/T AWD? Just wondering if it was a common problem with AWD in general or just the implementation of it on the R/T. I don't remember hearing a noise on my SXT last winter, but coming from a 4x4 truck maybe I just chalked it up to being normal. Starting to get colder here in CLE, so I'll be listening.

Well apparently the service adviser I've been dealing with for the past year is suddenly "no longer with us" over the weekend. I have a call in with the service manager to see if they've gotten anywhere with it.

My grandparents have a 13 v6 AWD and it doesn't make any noises.

The dealership was too incompetent to figure it out and dicked around until the warranty was up. At one point when they had things apart they didn't lube the connection of the trans and transfer case and those splines tore themselves up.

I replaced the trans and transfer case with a low miles set from a junkyard. The noise was gone then. A year later though (this past December) I had the splines between the trans and transfer case fail. I used lube on them but apparently not enough or the right stuff.

So now with my original trans and my low miles transfer case with a new input shaft the awd decel noise is back. Not sure if it's the trans (seems unlikely since it's fine in rwd) or something that is out of tolerance with that new transfer case shaft.
