So I recently started to notice an odd noise coming from the front end when I let off the gas pedal going about 40mph. The noise sounds similar to a firetruck siren winding down. The noise depends on the rpm as well. Any thoughts would be appreicated! See the video for the noise.
I am sorry that you are experiencing a noise in the front end.
There is a STAR case S1309000034 regarding whine noise from engine when running. One diagnosis from this case is for a whine-type noise coming from the engine area when started cold may be due to a defective engine oil pump. The whine noise will increase when engine RPM increases.
Please have your vehicle inspected by your servicing dealer to review if this STAR case is related to your issue.
Keep up posted on the findings.
I will be taking the car in next week to have it looked at. The service center didn't seem to know about the STAR issue. I will talk to them in person though when I drop it off to see if they know more. Thanks!
I have a 2012 Charger SE with 68K on it.The tires have about 15k left on them. 5K miles ago I started to get a “grinding”sound in the front end at low speed when turning left or right. Dealer says thefront end is tight and they don’t hear it. I hear it on all type of roads butthe dealer lot. Been told this car does not have grease fittings so that couldnot be it. I don’t see any tire rubbing and don’t have any vibration in the steeringwheel.
Not sure if you intended on posting in my issue thread, but you may have more help starting a new thread.
But from what you describe the issue as, it seems like it could just be noise from the power steering. I owned a 2006 Chrysler 300 (2.7L, fleet model) and it make odd noises when steering hard left/right at low speeds. Also, the tie rods being worn caused additional noises in my situation. Maybe you could be experiencing this. I started to notice the 300's noises at about 80k miles.
Thanks nate828. It was a Rookie Mistake on my part.
It sounds to me like metal on metal. But I know with these new cars it could be anything. Thanks for the information I will look into it.
And sorry I miss posted on your post
After taking the car to the shop, they were unable to find anything wrong with the car. They actually were not able to recreate the noise. So I guess from this point forward I will just have to keep an ear out for any changes with the noise. I have put nearly 1,500 miles on the car since the noise started and there hasn't been a change so hopefully it is the engine breaking in still.
So while looking through the threads and finding the fuse pull discussion to disable the front wheel drive (on AWD models), I decided to see if the front diff/drive was the cause. After pulling the fuse so the front drive was disengaged, the noise completely stopped. Before I begin to take things apart, anyone have an idea where to start. Since there is noise only when AWD is active, hence front wheels engaged, I would expect the noise to be coming from the front diff or front drive shaft. Any thoughts on this would be great!
Were you the one who posted on my YT channel? I replied there.
If not, here was my reply:
I have not. I realized it was when AWD was active - whether its for autostick, below 38°F, or raining. The shop couldn't find anything either. The only 'fix' is to pull the fuse for the front diff engagement so that its cannot activate AWD. I am hoping it is some bearing vibration that is just audible and will not do any damage (car is now out of warranty)
Yeah that was me on youtube. This morning when it wasn't raining I put the car in autostick to engage the AWD and it started making the noise again. It seems to make it most at light throttle. I put the car back into drive and as soon as it showed RWD on the EVIC the noise stopped.
To me it definitely seems like something drivetrain related. I'm guessing either the front diff or the transfer case, but who knows. I'm still under warranty, so I'll try and get my dealer to look at it when I have time.
By the way, where in Pittsburgh are you from? I grew up outside of West Newton (Greensburg area).
Unfortunately my exhaust was 'too loud' for the shop for them to really dig into the issue. Maybe you will have better luck. I am in Murrysville so not too far from there. You still in PA?
I have an appointment at the dealer for next Thursday. This is my first time having a car at a dealership (or any shop for that matter), but I wasn't expecting to have to wait that long to have it looked at.
Anyway, I'm kind of expecting it to be a bearing from the sound it's making.
Alright, so the dealer looked at my car today. The tech agreed that it's a bearing, and he thinks it's one in the front axle itself. Apparently the part is restricted by Chrysler, but is available (never heard of that before). They said it's probably going to take until later next week to get the part, so I guess I'll have to wait until then to see if that's the problem or not.
So apparently the front powertrain unit is just the front diff, and that's what the dealer replaced. The car was still making the noise afterwards and after talking to star tech, they're fairly sure it's the front axle shaft (they call it prop shaft) that goes through the oil pan. They've ordered the part and will have it tuesday, so hopefully that will take care of the noise.
The front axle shaft (they call it a driveshaft, but did confirm it's the one going through the oil pan) was the problem. They changed that and the noise is gone. If anyone's in the central SC area, Wilson Chrysler in Winnsboro is definitely the place to go to.
Awesome. Since my car is out of warranty, I might have difficult getting them to do it at no cost. I'll show the invoice and see what they say. Thanks for keeping me posted!!
Hold off on doing anything with that. While the car didn't make any noise in AWD (autostick) when I picked it back up, it made the same noises again today when it was in AWD (rain). It's still that high pitched whistle with a bit of bearing noise under it. Going to have the dealer look at it again.
The dealer has diagnosed the noise as being the transfer case now. They ordered it and it should be getting replaced next week (part coming from from MI).
I talked to the service guy a few days ago since my car was in the shop for a blend door failure. He said this is powertrain related. I then confirmed this by looking at the 2014 model year warranty book.
Yes it is powertrain related. They replaced the transfer case last week, but the same whistling/bearing noise was still there. The dealer is getting back in contact with corporate again and is supposed to get back with me to see what they're going to do next.
