I've noticed a loud clatter on my 14 R/T that occurs on the first startup of the day or if the car has been sitting for a few days. It almost sounds like the rockers want to fall out of it for 1-2 seconds and then all is well.
Oil levels are good and the oil isn't overdue for a change. It used to do this from time to time but now it's happening more often. It goes away as soon as it has good oil pressure.
Any thoughts before I visit the dealership and let them hang on to it?
I should add that this only seems to happen if the car is parked on a slight angle where the nose is higher than the rear. On level ground this isn't a concern.
Remember that any of today's oils that you put in the car has virtually no detergents or dispersents in them. Typically 10 to 19 ppm. This is like wet tissue paper for the sole of your shoe. As these oils don't handle the gums and sludges that occur in the engine very well, the lifters can get stuck with these compounds and not pump up very fast. Also since the molecules of the oil are very small...like a ping pong ball....they bleed out of the lifters pretty quick.
Our customers get an oil that has 90 ppm to 300 ppm in their oils that will very effectively get rid of any gums and sludges and keep them from forming in the first place. Since our QB molecules are more like beach balls than ping pong balls, the oil doesn't bleed out of the lifters and the cushion that is created by the oil keeps the engines quiet and smooth. Also stops the piston slap that is typical on these engines at start up as well. This noise is the rod knock sound that occurs when idling when cold.
Add the ACES IV to the top of the engine and the Hemi Tick is completely eradicated in these engines. 19,000+ people now are using our materials and as of December 2015, we hit 100,000,000 miles of customer driven use of all our products without a single failure. I know you know about us but I thought I would directly answer your issue. :bigthumb:
I assumed it was the lifters bleeding down as well and agree that QB and Aces are incoming to address the bigger issue of wear and tick.
What I find interesting is that when I park the car on level ground or slightly nose down, the rattle doesn't happen. I can't seem to explain that.
I have you loaded into my cell phone and will be in touch tomorrow morning to order some Aces and do a quick consultation for all three of my rides since I want them to last. As of now between both Chargers and my wife's FJ, we have everything we want and we'd like to keep them as pristine as possible.
Oil was changed at 13K and I know have 16.5K on it. I'm using a dealer installed Mopar filter. It's gotten worse as of late though so that may be the culprit. It was fine after the oil change and it's done it throughout it's life but only occasionally. As of late it's been doing it more frequently (every few days) but it seems dependent on the angle at which I park it (nose uphill or downhill).
Thanks for jumping in.
