Earlier this winter my car stopped responding to button presses on the remote after sitting for a while (usually several hours). Even though it wouldn't respond to the buttons, it would still unlock when I touch the door handle with the key in my pocket. The weird thing is that as soon as I'd touch the door handle and "wake up" the car, the remote would work perfectly fine, even from a distance. Both fobs exhibited the same behavior.
At first I thought this was a battery issue (battery is only 3-4 months old) as this issue cropped up during the winter on cold nights. I'd also get a "Service AWD" along with a "FCW Off" message on the dash for a couple seconds after starting on a cold morning, and both systems would work perfectly fine. My Durango will do goofy electrical things with a weak battery too as have other family members voyagers and stratuses, seems to be a Chrysler thing.
About a week ago I discovered that if I keep pressing buttons on the remote (usually about 10 times), the car will respond and the remote will work normally for a while. Tonight though, as soon as the headlights would shut off after unlocking it, it stopped responding to the remote until you press it a bunch of times or until I'd touch the door handle to wake it up. It's not cold either, it's been in the 70s here the past couple days.
So far I've tried leaving the battery disconnected for 10-15 minutes to reset the computer, and that made no difference. I've also checked the battery voltage when it wouldn't work (was 12.4v earlier) as well as used a load tester on it (came in right in the middle of the ok range for an 800cca battery). I also tried hooking up (not simultaneously) both a battery charger and a jumper pack to the car to try and rule out a battery issue, and neither made any difference.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Too long, didn't read:
Car won't respond to fob button presses unless I press the button about 10 times first or until I touch the door handle to "wake up" the car. After either of those the remote works normally for a while.
Here's a quick video I took of the issue:
