So Sunday I was headed to the bank on a regular road in town. There was a pack of vultures (10-15) dragging some dead animal across the street. I was doing 47 mph and blocked in by a car to my left and a car stupidly tailgating me. I had no escape and I sure of hell wasn't going to get rear ended. As I got closer to the pack of vultures, they decided to fly up. One was headed right for my beautiful PCP Charger. I ended up braking as much as I could without getting into a huge accident with the idiot behind me. The stupid huge vulture ended up smashing itself into my windshield (I slowed down to 30 mph), spraying glass all over the inside of my car. Everyone in the car was fine but were a bit shocked. Thankfully I wasn't far from home and drove the Charger home.
Today the windshield guy is coming to the house to replace it. No cost!!
Well not to make a joke but, road kill is the best tasting. I heard on the news in NYC that a wild Turkey smashed into a guys car causing death to the bird, and a big hole in the guys windshield. He too had glass all over the interior of his vehicle and no one was hurt, the bird didn't do to well though.
I saw that exact scenario play out years ago on the Garden State Parkway. Lady driving and a turkey smashed into the windshield. It was still alive flapping around in the car blood splattering everywhere. Was hilarious to see, but you felt for the lady in the car obviously scared half to death.
This post reminded me of accident few years back on I-25, when a biker heading to Sturgis hit buzzard ( same thing as vulture I think). Pretty bad accident, more than one bike involved . No one killed
I would have hit the brakes. People (should) have insurance, vultures don't. Other car would have been at-fault in Texas if he had rear-ended you & responsible...but it looks like it was just the windshield & no out of pocket cost to you, so you lucked out if it had hit that plastic front end, a new PCP-painted front fascia would have cost a fortune...
MY son was in the car. Didn't want to get into a worse accident than just the windshield. No fault in Florida as well. Just glad that I only hit one vulture and not like the others that were flying as well.
I know this is off topic, but this thread reminded me of a vulture encounter I had a few years ago. I was mountain biking in Whiting Ranch near home and I decided to take a break by some Edison power poles. I got off the bike and sat on a large rock and had the feeling I was being watched. There wasn't anyone in sight, human or animal, but the feeling was definitely there. I kept looking around and finally looked up. You guessed it! Four turkey vultures sitting on top of the poles were looking right at me! Needless to say, I got back on the bike and kept moving.
They won't do anything, but they are goofy looking. They're all over the place around here, and if you're walking half the time they just look at you if they're on the ground. If I go for a run and don't see them at first, they do spook me. They must be 3 feet tall, and have no hair on their red heads. Remind me of the goofs in The Lion King. I yell at them sometimes. Did you ever see them in the trees drying their wings? Theyre huge.
It was meant to be humorous, although it really did happen. I saw them every time I was in that area. Encounters with coyotes, road runners, mountain lions, tarantulas, etc were also
fairly common. Remember, it's the critters home, we're just visitors.
OMG I would of been screaming if the vulture came straight through the window like how that turkey is. That's totally insane. I'm going to get a vulture decal for the side of my car...my buddy is getting a gator one. He ran over an alligator here in Florida with his SRT Challenger.
Wow that's an insane story. Glad no one was hurt! I always encounter huge turkey vultures flying out of the way just in time. Can't believe you actually hit one. They're actually incredibly smart birds. Apparently this one wasn't lol.
