Hey guys I'm really new to all of this but I just got onto the forums and have had my 11 RT for a couple months now. I want to start adding some horsepower to it and it sounds like aftermarket headers are a good move? I would probably go with shorties because im looking for low end gains rather than high end since its my daily driver. Anyone have aftermarket headers that gave them some good hp gains? Any responses are appreciated I'm curious to what people have and if this is a good move. I already have a solo performance cat back and love it! Don't know if that will make a difference in any opinions on headers, thanks in advance!
If you want a header that will give you consistent gains without requiring a tune, then look for a set of SRT shorties from the 6.1 and also a set of corresponding mid pipes to go with them. These have been dyno proven to be just as good as aftermarket shorties such as JBA and are OEM pieces (much better quality).
For the 5.7 the cast manifolds are the largest restriction so replacing them does increase flow and power.
Finally, keep in mind that long tubes will gain more HP across the entire range but will require tuning to avoid a lean condition while shorties can be used without tuning. Long tubes also partner well with a cam, rear end gears and a power adder if you plan to go that route.
Either option is sound but your best bang for the buck is the SRT shorties and mids.
A good set of shorties from a 6.1 is the best bang for the buck. However, they're not necessarily very easy to find. You can grab a set of JBA shorties for ~$400 if you know where to look. Best advice for either scenario is use OEM gaskets, and OEM bolts.
That being said, the shorties will keep the low-end power alive and are generally aimed FOR the low-end. Long tubes are aimed for top-end power and tend to hurt the low-end power which is why they work to their full potential when tied in with some bolt-ons, a cam, and gears. Otherwise, expect some slight loss off the get.
Best sounding? Any LT header. The shorties will make small to no difference in tone. The LT will def liven up the exhaust tone, even more with HF (or no) cats and a full exhaust.
Thanks for the info guys! definitely gonna look for a set of 6.1 shorties first but if I can't find any ill probably end up going with long tubes and just wait a little longer and save up for a cam to go with it.
