Parked the car last night like normal, no lights on. This morning the malfunction indicator light is on. I looked it up in the manual and of course it told me to take it to the dealer. It's not flashing, it's just on. The dealer can't get me in until Thursday.
But my issue is, I have to drive between now and then. So, does anyone know if it's safe to use the car? The manual said the flashing of the light is big trouble, it's not flashing. But I'm afraid to push it. The service guy also said it "should" be under warranty. This car is a year old with a 4 year warranty, has to be warranty right?
Thanks guys. Just wanted some feedback, I'm totally distressed over this damn light.
might help a little...
On vehicles equipped with OBD-II, the light has two stages: steady (indicating a minor fault such as a loose gas cap or failing oxygen sensor) and flashing (indicating a severe fault, such as catalytic converter problems or engine misfire). When the MIL is lit, the engine control unit stores a fault code related to the malfunction, which can be retrieved with a scan tool and used for further diagnosis.
That's everything the manual said too lol. But thanks! It's steady, not flashing. I just want to know if you think it's safe to drive for two days with that light on til I can get to the dealer or am I screwing it up worse?
Swing by your local Autozone or Advance Auto parts, or other parts place, those two for sure, and others will have a basic scanner that can most likely get you the codes. Or, you can do the key trick to get them. Report back to us what they say. Then we can help you figure out whats up.
Ok just talked to a different dealer since mine can't get me in soon enough. Another one nearby will get it in tomorrow but when I told them the code and all that they said it's safe to drive just bad for fuel consumption. So hopefully it's not as bad as I was thinking. Trying to remain calm lol. Thanks again!
Lol no one stole any gas. I took it in yesterday and they ran it through the procedures required for the code showing. Nothing. The only thing they could guess triggered the sensor was the fact that I have been parking on a sharp angle incline which has been messing with my gas reading as well. It's almost like something is freezing up now that the temps are below freezing here overnight. But that still sounds so far fetched.
Anyway, they checked everything, gas tank and all lines. Nothing. Cleared the code, took it for a test drive and the light has not come back on. So I'm just hoping it's all good now. Winter is going to hit hard here soon and I sure don't need problems starting now of all times. Thanks again for all input here.
i wouldnt think anything inside the gas tank would be freezing, thats wierd. If they cleared the light and it runs fine, i guess i wouldnt worry about it, however if ur gas gauge is going low too fast call them again, or if anything else goes wrong. My car had a hiccup on me once when i was driving uphill the check engine light came on and the car lost power for all of 5 seconds, took it to dealer and nothing came up and havent had any problems since.
My Malfunction Indicator Light started blinking this morning on my way into work. It had been on for about 3 days. When it started blinking, the car began riding rough, and acting like it might cut off. I joined this forum this morning and found this page. I did the key trick and got the code 0456. My Charger is a 2008 with 58000 miles on it. Can someone tell me how much damage I'm looking at??
Hmm, that comes back as Evap Emmisions code (small). Most common cause for this code is a slightly loose/crossthreaded gas cap. Check that, let it go a few days, and let us know what happens. Most codes like this, once you fix the condition, if you don reset the code, takes a few "drive cycles", meaning warm up to full operating temp, then cool down, to clear, in some cases as many as 4-5 drive cycle, before the system in sure its not going to happen again.
Thanks, GLHS837. I went out and replaced the locked gas cap I'd bought in Sept. with the one that came with my car. Tightened it, and started the car. I let it sit for about 10 minutes, the I put it in drive and OMG! It just started shaking! I am so geared up because I'm to take a trip this weekend. The light just started blinking this morning. Why is it doing all this shaking? I'm preparing to leave work and go to a shop. This makes me sad.
Hmm, sorry, I missed the bucking part. That indicates there's something amiss in the var system, most likely up under the hood. They can be a sumbugger to find, too.
It looks as if all I needed to do was add a quart of oil! I checked it and it was a qt low, so after work, I went to Wal Mart. By Sunday morning, the light turned itself off. :beerchug:
Okay so I have tried the key trick and I never saw a code. All I saw was it saying done. The malfunction indicator light is still on.. what happened with me is i blew my radio fuse and I changed it out but after that he light has been on steadily and not blinking. Any suggestions?
My mil light came on in my 2013 dodge charger really confused as it's a fairly new car. Called service dept but no one is in any ideas what it could be?
Not without knowing what codes it's throwing. Do the key damce trick to see if it's a code that comes up. Alternatively, go to any Advance Auto or Autozone and ask them to pull the codes.
so i have a MIL showing however my car will not start i had one click and did not start i have a new battery and the ETC came on and went away. i tried the three turn trick i did not receive a code and i'm so confused now i verified my fuses they are all good does anyone have a clue what the issue may be i have a 2010 dodge charger sxt 3.5L.
