So my wife over heated the 5.7. Turned out to be a hole in the radiator and she didn't notice until it was too late. After shutting the car off she was unable to get it started again and I was told by a mechanic he was unable to get compression. My brother and I are going to tear down the motor and try to resolve the issue. Anyone run into this issue and know what we should be looking for or if it's even possible to salvage? If not possible to rebuild anyone knowledgable on a 5.7 to 6.1 swap? I've seen many post on 3.5 to 5.7 but not much on my situation. Is it a plug and play due to both being V8 pcm's? Or will I need a whole new computer as well? Thanks for the helps everyone!
No reason you can't rebuild the motor in it. Heads are toast, so go with something better when you go back in if you're upping the performance while you're in there.
Usually on overheated, aluminum head motors, it doesn't take much to get them running good again, since the heads warping is the cause of the problems.
I found a local performance shop that has the CNC machining and can possibly fix and improve my heads for hopefully a fair price. I'll definitely keep updates on this once the ball gets rolling. Any thoughts on if my pistons are damaged as well or just most likely the heads?
Once you get the heads off you will be able to inspect the pistons, cylinder walls, etc ... Drop the pan and check the lower part of the engine too. Aluminum heads warp with excessive heat, cast-iron blocks are stronger but overheated oil can breakdown and lead to scoring of the crank journals, etc ... depending on how long the engine was running at over-temp conditions. You don't want to fix the upper half just to have the lower half cause problems in the future.
Depending on how bad it is - you can decide to keep/rebuild this engine or put in another engine. Rebuild vs swap comes down to what your goal for the car is and how much $$$ you want to spend.
.
could also just pick up a used 5.7 from a recycler and drop it in. Done. I see them on CL all the time for $1500. Then you still have the original to pull apart and when you can. Sorry to hear though - good luck.
