I'm guessing decals wouldn't do very well long-term. Not the least is the stresses that happen on the wheel. The upper spoke is moving forward twice as fast as the vehicle while the bottom spoke is effectively at 0 velocity. If even a tiny corner of a vinyl decal peels up, air resistance and centrifugal forces will be very likely to peel the rest off. Paint is probably a better path.

I figured the hood decal was a good example of adhesion properties of the material. It doesn't lift, so unless the edge of the wheel sticker is damaged or scuffed, etc, it should stay put.

There's a few guys here w/ black rims, even black SRT models.
I don't have pshop or any other image editing software, so for me to make a 'mock-up' image would include black electrical tape on my wheels and a camera.

I had another idea that might be helpful as far as creating the look we are trying to achieve.

I talked to a guy that sprays bedliners (Brand not critical at this point) to determine if a smooth (non-textured) version was available. He thinks it might be 'do-able', but suspects the surface would have at least a light texture due to the nature in which it coats and drys.

Another option was a product that replicates black chrome from a spray can. i've seen a few pics of high quality that make me want to look at this option a bit further.

No word back from RiderGrafix yet as to their opinion on the matter.

Ultimately, I was hoping to create a product that would conceal the chrome but not damage it.

I'll be posting a pic of my idea when I get home from work. Just a heads up...I had to use MS Paint to do it so it'll look a bit rough. Nevertheless, it'll give people an idea of what I'm talking about. Hopefully it's what Dan is looking for also.

I can say i'm not going to paint my wheels since they need to be sanded. In the end, I'd like to be able to revert my wheels back to OEM in I choose. In the mean time, I did some searching for auto vinyl sheeting. Here's a promising lead:
(on my iPhone so not sure if that URL linked)

Anyway. $66 for 24"x60" would probably be enough to do each wheel with 1 piece. Lots of wasted product but would probably look better than using multiple pieces per wheel. More secure too I'd imagine.

Not to beat a dead horse here but I've seen a few other threads where people were asking about painting the 18" alloys black. Here is a pic I found as well as a few I made. Please know they aren't the best as I used MS Paint to do them.

I wanted to show a few variations... progressing with more black coverage.

Those are interesting.
I like #3 (with the black stripes that go all the way to the edge) and #5 (the whole thing black) the best.

I'm actually talking about the 20" chrome clad wheels on my R/T, not these.

Well shoot. Sorry about that then. Maybe someone else here will find these useful.

Same concept, same everything, except the wheels to start with.

No word from RiderGrafix yet.

I actually painted my srt8 wheels red the color of my car and they looked great. I've had them for about 1 1/2 years like that with no problems. But I only painted the pockets red and the srt part red and left the restpolished. cost me about $25 to $30 for all the materials and it took me about 2-3 hours to finish them, of course that includes sanding, priming and painting the wheels.

here's a link to a thread that I posted with pics of the srt8 wheels.
