what exactly has to be done to the engine in order to boost more than six pounds safely with a supercharger?

Pistons and rods are the main issue. If your are on a tighter budget, you can get forged pistons and rods which allow you to increase boost over 6psi.

For those with higher budgets, a 392 storker with forged pistons, rods and crank would be the option to go with.

There are quite a few companies selling these parts, including DCX Depot.

In the 5.7, the toner ring is the weakest link.
We sell a forged 5.7 rotating assembly for $1700 plus $200 if you want us to balance it. This will give you a forged 3.58 crank, forged h-beam rods, and forged 2618 pistons. If you want a 6.1L, we can do that for an additional $500 and we can do a 6.4L for the same price as a 6.1L.

I can show what happens to stock 6.1L bottom end when it doesn't hold up to boost:

Seems the edges of the pistons came off.

Do you guys have direct replacement 5.7 forged pistons and rods? If so, how much are they running cost-wise? Feel free to PM if necessary.

Also, would such items work with a 6.1 crank?

Zing! :D

We sell direct replacement pistons/rods for use with the 6.1 crank or 5.7 crank.

For the 5.7 we have
3.917" 9.0 CR
3.917" 11.0 CR
3.937" 9.0 CR
3.937" 11.0 CR

For the 6.1 we have
4.060" 9.0 CR
4.060" 11.0 CR
4.080" 9.0 CR
4.080" 11.0 CR

The rods are forged H-beam rods with ARP rod bolts. 6.243" length for use with stock 3.58 stoke crank and the pistons listed above.

The pistons
2618 forgings
Strutted skirt design with as little as .004" clearance
excellent skirt wear and minimal noise or knock
radiused valve pockets for detonation resistance and increased flow around the valves
anti-detonation grooves with the added benefit of keeping the top ring groove free of carbon
3mm oil rings for better oil control and reduced friction for more hp
pressure groove for enhanced ring seal
chrome moly pins and spiralox
tool steel pins optional
brush domes require minimal deburring by the engine builder
skirt coated for lower friction, reduced noise, and superior life
multi fit valve pockets for interchangeability of cylinder heads

Cost is $1200 for pistons, rods, wrist pins, and rings.

More info on the pistons here.
