AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Several hip-hop artists received permission to feature the 2006 Dodge Charger in music videos and other promotions, continuing a string of cultural coups for the company.
The Detroit News reported Dodge has received requests from a range of musicians, including party-rap duo the Ying Yang Twins, who use the muscle car in a TV commercial to promote their new album, USA (United States of Atlanta). Hip-hop artist Twista and Houston rapper Mike Jones have shown off their new Chargers on the MTV series Cribs. Reggae-style rapper Sean Paul used the Charger in a video for his new single, "We Be Burnin."
The rap world has had an affinity for Chrysler products, including the Chrysler 300 sedan and the Dodge Magnum wagon.
The automaker says footage of the Charger has popped up in a number of rap videos without formal permission. Analysts say any product endorsement by rap artists helps to propel a brand. Busta Rhymes' hit single "Pass the Courvoisier" is credited with leading to a 20-percent boost in sales of the cognac two years ago.
What this means to you: Does street cred mean anything to you? If so, then you're probably angling for a Chrysler product. If not, then just click on the next story.
