View Full Version : Fiberglass vs. Carbon Fiber???
Black ChargeR/T

I want to get an SRT8 hood. I plan on painting it to color match my black beauty, and wanted to know if there is any structural difference or difference in function in the Fiberglass vs. Carbon Fiber hoods?
Since the fiberglass is cheaper, i thought about just doing that, and maybe even adding the trunk package too.
Also, can an SRT8 spoiler be added to a fiberglass or carbon fiber trunk?
Any help is appreciated, look forward to this nice purchase!!!!:headbang::headbang::headbang:

it can be added to a carbon fiber trunk. I am looking into doing that but with carbon fiber spoiler on my stock trunk instead

What is the difference????
Does the fiberglass look the same as the carbon fiber?

I am also looking for the answer to this question, as well as differences in safety (CF vs fiber glass, plus both vs. stock). I was just in a wreck and need a new hood asap!

Carbon Fiber is structurally stronger. Not nescessarily highter. If fiberglass is hit it will break, shatter and give, CF can become a razor sharp knife and not give. CF is what Indy cars and F1 cars are made of.
You could mount a SRT wing to a CF trunk if the proper bracing is done on the bottom of the trunk. I personally have not seen the underside of either the trunk or hood.
Fibergalss witll have a gelcoat on top of the glass to give it a protective coating. The CF has a good UV procetive clear coat on it. So on Fiberglass you do not see the weave but on CF you will. If you were to paint them both , you could never tell the difference.

Well said.
You can mount the spoiler to the fiberglass trunk as well. Our hoods and trunks come with a fiberglass OEM inner structure. As seen below

Yes that is true - you can paint carbon fiber. But why spend the extra cash if you are going to paint it? Why not get fiberglass?

i want something thats gonna hold up. i do alot of highway driving i just bought the grip kit fascia so i need a srt8 hood. what would u recommend? i dont like the carbon fiber look. I figured since the CF was a little better it would be easier to paint. I was told that with fiber glass hoods they dont come primed and it cost alot just to get it painted like 800 bucks. That was the trufiber hood though. Any recommendations

As much as I hate to say it - I would try to find an OEM SRT8 hood. The CF and fiberglass hoods are two pieces bonded together.I can not speak for other company`s but when I am on the freeway and a big rig comes towards me , when he passes my hood does a flex dance. I have a True Fiber ram air hood. I have had it about 4 months and it is holding up ok.
As far as painting prices - well that will vary on the people painting it, how much prep and blending. Mine was done for 600 bux with true fire flames on the scoop part. It wouldn`t matter if the hood was carbon fiber or fiberglass.
I know CBD will stand behind their product but as he stated in an earlyer post, it is Carbon Fiber on top with a fiberglass under side. So not "a true" carbon fiber hood. No knocks on CBD at all as they have some awesome products and I have some on my ride.
True carbon fiber hoods would be pretty damgerous on the streets if in a wreck.
I may suggest calling CBD and see what they say. Good people there.

All hoods metal, fiberglass and carbon fiber are made of 2 pieces a top and a bottom and then bonded together, unless it is just a outside skin for a race car.
Either in carbon fiber or fiberglass our hood will stand the test of time. No need to pay that crazy amount for the OEM hood when you can get the CBD fiberglass or carbon fiber for less money. If you have any questions just give us a call,
