I have just been offered a job on the eastern shore of Maryland. I have spent exactly 20 hours on the eastern shore. If any of you live in the area of Kent's Island or Centreville, I would like to hear your opinions of the area. It would be most helpful if perhaps you have moved there from a major metro area. Thanks, Eric :)

I'm a Maryland girl, born and raised. For clarification, there is a Centerville Md (near Frederick) and a Centreville Md (Eastern Shore) Neither one is anywhere near Centreville, VA. Clearly you are talking about the Eastern Shore. I haven't been there in years, but I will tell you what I remember. I'm sure there has been alot of growth there since then, but I doubt the basic underlying demographics have changed much.
The world changes when you cross the Bay Bridge and enter the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Things slow down....way down. Turn north after the bridge and you hit Centreville. This part of Maryland has very little industry of it's own, the businesses are mostly blue collar and mostly serve the needs of the DC Metro area. There used to be a small minority of folks who moved there from the city for a slower pace, and make the daily commute into DC. I'm sure this group has grown considerably since I left, and the area may have become more suburban. If you drive through Centreville and see an Outback and a Target, that would be a clue that this has occurred. Still I imagine the redneck roots are still firmly entrenched.
Gotta jump out for a minute and proudly proclaim myself as a full fledged redneck....not bashing rednecks, I are one! I'd actually love to live in that area, but it isn't for everyone.
If you like have a boat, like to fish and want a quiet lifestyle, you may enjoy Centreville and the surrounding area. A boat is a must on Kent Island. Centreville is sandwiched in between the posh Maryland/Delaware beaches and the hustle and bustle of the DC Suburbs. If you want to get out of Centreville and experience modern civilization in Annapolis, DC or at the Beaches, be prepared to sit in traffic, lots of it. Huge quantities of people make the weekly pilgrimage from the city to the beach, and all of them must cross the Bay Bridge and pass within a few miles of Centreville. I have sat on that road without moving a mile for literally hours. I have heard they have improved the bridge, though. If you do drive into DC, you will pass through the worst side of town (Southeast) to get to the places you would want to visit.
What you won't see is anything like Atlanta. Everyone I ever met from Atlanta didn't like Maryland much. I guess because Atlanta is very modern and fun and progressive, Maryland is old school and meets your basic needs.
The good news is the cost of living is much lower than the other side of the bay, and you will have a job. That is the reason the Eastern Shore hasn't grown as quickly as many other parts of that region. Few jobs. Keep that in mind if you have a spouse or adult child moving there with you who may need employment, or if your job is the type that has a limited duration. What kind of work do you do?
Again, I haven't been there in over 10 years, so there may have been enough changes to render my above points totally innaccurate. I think there is a member on this forum from Southern Maryland (Western shore). Hopefully he will pipe in and share his views.

Just found this link. From the looks of the picture and the data, Centreville hasn't changed much. Still very rural, low cost of living (Average new house built last year was $104,000!! Compare that to Annapolis or DC and that number would quadruple at least.

Maryland cops are BRUTAL!!!!! They park their cruisers in the median, get out and shoot cars with A DAMN RADAR RIFILE...or something. I was just zipping along and was like HOLY @$#%!!! Too late, he then hopped in his car and tracked me down a few miles down the I. I thought, NJ and GA troopers were horrible, now I Put Maryland up there. Glad i live in Jersey.....I know, what exit? duh...Thanks Joe Piscopo. Hate that joke.

Undertaker, MD's eastern shore is great, it's not as redneck anymore, there are those areas, but not that many. Still rural, lots of farm land, but there are bigger cites, like Salisbury, Easton, Cambridge. Kent Island is just over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge from Annapolis, famous for the Naval Academy. Cops are definately unforgivable. Hopefully you will not have to commute over the bridge, it's terrible going west. If you move up this way. look us fellow Charger owners up.
Good luck.

OK Miranda,, from one Maryland redneck to another.... HOWDY!
In addition to standard radar, Maryland State Police are using laser speed detection equipment. That's the thing you see them aiming like a firearm to zap ya, then chase ya down.

Eastern Shore is awesome. Just spent the weekend down there....Kent County is surrounded by water...and heck, you can be to Balt, Annap, DC pretty easily....You'll learn to hate bay bridge traffic and the beach traffice on 50 all summer, but its a beautiful area.

Yes, Miranda, in Garrett County there are actual inhabitants, includin' this Mopar freak.
Deep Creek Lake is growing too much for me. Many so-called large secondary homes going up around the rim.
I prefer the hills here as opposed to the flatland. Almost Ohio? How 'bout damn near West Virginia?

Shoot, youre not near WV, it's wrapped around you, isnt it?
I love that part of the state. I would have moved there years ago except there didn't seem to be many jobs. What do people do for a living there?

I live 8 miles from the Bridge and everything posted above is fairly correct. My daughter lives on Kent Island. It is not as rural as it once was but still pretty nice. Property values are going up bigtime and the average is 250k-350k. Invest in something as big as your financing will allow and you will not be sorry. If you have specific questions pm me and I will answer what I can.........

WV is wrapped around me. I live about 10 miles from either border.
Most jobs here are oriented to the tourisim industry. There is one deep coal mine and and industry jobs to support that. Construction industry is big for the time being at Deep Creek Lake.
Here in the winter, I'm patiently awaiting the arrival of my SRT-8...... :asleep: :asleep:

thanks for all of the respones. I turned down the job for various reasons, not the least of which was the insane housing prices there. I don't mind telling you that my house would cost me 2.5 times in Maryland what I could sell it for here. And of course my salary wouldn't increase nearly that much. Thanks though, it really is a beautiful area and one that I would like to spend some vacation time in.

Hmmm. I'm detecting a touch of northeastern arrogant assholism with the rock mountain comment. Thanks partner for validating my decision. I'm sure you all ain't that way, but what the hell? I can justify it to my wife now. Thanks.
Maryland is hardly Northeastren!!! Mits firmly mid atlantic and nothing like up north. Kind of a mix between you southren guys and the north to tell the truth. I may be stupid, but what does that rock mountian comment even mean??

I apologize for my comments earlier...they were uncalled for. I didn't mean them. The rock mountain comment comes from Stone Mountain Georgia. Which happens to have a bunch of Confederate imagery carved on the side of it. Quite an embarrasement to the 4 of us in GA who accept the fact that the North won the civil war. Again, I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me.
I am in Calvert County accross the Bay. Only a few miles by boat, but to drive to the Eastern shore, you have to cross in Annapolis.
The Eastern shore is gorgeous. I think you'll love it there. Good luck.
