View Full Version : ChargerForums Needs the Help of EVERY Member...

... to keep peace and harmony in the family!
I'm just going to get right to the point:
The post whoring for post counts has gotten out of control and is generating many complaints from the members who lean more toward the Charger topics end of things, which is after all, the purpose for which this forum was originally founded. At the same time, we know some of you have built great fun friendships and enjoy the opportunity to just talk about "stuff" with some redeeming value, post counts not included. We don't want to interfere with that either, so we came up with a solution that we hope will work for everyone, but we need everyone to cooperate for this compromise to work. When lurkers or searchers look for a Charger forum and resource, we want to be proud of what we have to offer and that can't happen if the majority of current threads listed are silly post count competitions, "only post here if..." threads, etc. You get the picture.
-I will build a new sub-forum in the Off Topic section later tonight-
The new sub-forum section will be dedicated to small talk, fun, and social chit chat. Post counts will NOT accrue in that section so as to discourage pointless threads about nothing but post counts. Currently active threads will be moved to the new section ASAP and some will be closed if they don't fit the new criteria
We ask that new threads in the social sub-forum be kept to a bare minimum so as not to overrun the Active Topics list. The goal is to keep a few good fun discussions running vs. a multitude of nonsense pointless threads. This will keep the Active Topics list less cluttered and will allow the social butterflies and the gearheads to co-exist amicably so all will be right with the world again!
The new section will be a work in progress and guidelines will be posted and amended as needed. In the meantime, staff will determine what is acceptable or unacceptable. If the post whoring continues unchecked, we will remove ALL post counts in OT and could escalate that to remove all post counts forum-wide. Please don't let it get to that.
The main Off Topic section will be off limits to social threads and will be for legitimate Off Topic, non-Charger threads only. Post counts will still accrue in that section. Social threads posted here will be moved, the OP will be warned once, and repeat offenders will be suspended or banned. You are welcome to share your thoughts in this thread, but for the sake of that discussion please know in advance that adding a chat room is NOT an option. We have had them on other sites with nothing but problems. For anyone wanting to have real time discussion, there is a place to list your IM address in your profile and it's a great alternative.
We are counting on each of you to do your part to make this happen...
Thanks, in advance for your assistance and cooperation with this project so EVERYONE gets what they want and need from their forum experience with us!

I will be interested in seeing the "rules" defining what is allowed in the main off topic and what belongs in the off off topic. PLEASE be specific so we don't post in the main and wind up getting spanked. I think I know what would continue to be allowed, but a set of posted rules is always valuable for reference.
Thanks Linda!

I like having the post counts because it really shows who is contributing to the site. I would tend to trust a guy's opinion who has 2,000 posts over a guy who has only 20. Also, it lets you know if you're dealing with a newbie.
However, there is a good handful of people out there who spend there entire time on here in off-topic, thus getting their post count to rise astronomically. Im all for an off-topic thread where people can chit chat about whatever they want, but those shouldnt count towards their post count. Thats all Im sayin...

I also wouldn't care a bit if post counts disappeared.
Now, while we're in fix-it mode, can we do anything about Umbra's dorkiness? :smoke:

That's what we're sayin' too!
I do believe there is some value in post counts as well, unfortunately post whoring devalues that and that's where we are at this point. We hope not to have to remove them completely and we think allowing a place to shoot the breeze w/o building post counts will help put things back in their proper perspective.

I would think that a reputation points system would add more valvue and less clutter to threads..Unfortunately, we've all seen how that system is abused as well. If we end up having to remove all post counts we could try a seniority badging system, which we've used elsewhere successfully. Frankly, from the supportive responses so far, I don't think post counts are in jeopardy!! :)

I could not agree more. I spend a good bit of time on a different forum (non-car related) and it's got some pretty strict rules.
No chatting in the for sale threads, etc. Infractions are given publicly and consistently. We are able to have meaningful conversations about the subject that brings us together, yet still have fun.
There is also a "chat" section like you are doing here and it works well.
Thank for doing this.
I also agree with Bigjim - I like hitting 'New Posts' to see what's going on and half of it is junk about God knows what.

I like the idea HEMEEE. Bravo!!
Just to clarify...this new forum will be where we go to BS about nothing in particular, pick on ChargerChick and metgo...basically, to PoHo. I've met some really great people on here from all over the U.S., and being able to chat with them like you would with your buddies down at the bar, is a great thing. Unfortunately, though, it can get out of hand...and I'll be the first on to admit that I am guilty of it myself. I just want to make sure I understand the rules because I don't want to get in trouble for having my PoHo fun where I'm not supposed to. :D
I could really care less about my post count. You could zero it out if you really wanted to. I've just enjoyed my post count "rivalry" with my friend soccerbachelor.
Removing the OT threads from the active threads list would also be good so that newcomers can see what this forum is truly about...and can be brought over to the "dark side" later. :D [EDIT: Disregard my last...I just saw where you said you weren't about to do that. Sorry...I missed that the first time through.]

thank you for this. While I add to the random topics from time to time. I don't like that 10 or 15 (at times) of the top 20 are some random poho thread. It gets way too cluttered and you sometimes feel you cant find useful information. I hope till will return it to how it once was. I think this is a good start.
I didn't realize this was becoming a problem. I browse what's of interest to me, ignore the other junk, read what I need to know and hit the road.

This is way, way overdue. Maybe now I can start coming back to these forums.
I'm one of the people (perhaps the few) that don't browse specific forums, but rather, hit the "New posts" link, and yes, the amount of inane chattering (no offense) really hosed up the usability of this website for me for well over a year.
Too bad posting in the new forum didn't decrement your post count like it does in FYAD.

You know... it is funny. I booked on the other day and thought about exactly what you mentioned. I admit that I have, on occasion, jumped into threads like that but mainly because of my demented sense of humour. Like other posters here, I generally look around for specific topics of interest to me and skirt around the other stuff. So I am glad you have collectively decided to come up with a viable solution that protects the integrity of this site. Kudos to you all....
i agree with epoch though i would have knocked all the silly ******* that post 30+ times a day in these post count threads back to 0.

I concur wholeheartedly! It's cool to have the mods split this into an entirely new section (for those ppl who do nothing but post just for the hell of it and up their post #'s)
I agree with the mods that the main purpose of the forums (or any automotive related forums) is to PRIMARILY DISCUSS THE INTRACACIES OF THE CAR..... not to be a bunch a post ho's!
I compliment the mods on keeping everyone's thoughts in mind when splitting this. It allows for some vital, important discussion on the Chargers, while still allowing an area where ppl can just chit chat and ramble on about anything that they desire. Way to go admin/mods

The chat lounge exclusion would not even be necessary if we could keep to a couple/three threads. There in lies the rub. When most of the chatter was in the don't delete thread, it was easily avoidable...in fact I generally had to search for it unless it was late at night or very active.
When we have 30 Threads in the chat lounge, and folks still feel the need and want to chat in all 30 inside of 15 minutes....well, we solve the count issue, but we still have a user display issue.
I already got spanked for my comment once today. I'm done harping on it...but I stopped dropping by for about 7 months once...because this stopped being a car forum and became a silly posting playground.

It is easier, no complaints there. It just seems like there is excessive  about clutter on a particular page. Why not just go somewhere else? Its like getting ticked cause something you dont like is on tv. Do people sit there screaming at the screen or change the channel? or at least what makes more sense?

But it's NOT like that. Most people use either the New Posts page or Active Topics page as their gateway into the site. Heck, New Posts is what I have bookmarked. If they are both cluttered, there is no other consolidated option. It's not about less clicks, it's about organization of information.

yes but most people come on here with a purpose. not everyone comes on to go to every section equally. You have your techys, your off topicers, your stereo people. Very few people i think go to every single section so just cause a subject is active doesnt mean that people are going there when they come on. I've had my hand in many areas of the automotive field so i am one of the few that does but i think most people come on , click forum, and go to their respected area that they care about. I dont see how it will clean up active cause it's just another area thats active now. i'm not complaining about this seriously , at least not on this thread, i just dont see how clutter will be changed any by moving things to section c from section b. then you'll just have two sections of the same clogging up active. I do agree with you that moving the poho threads from one area to another will, in theory, not clean up the active topics. But, I do think that making the poho threads no longer add to post count may just keep the mass amount of topics to a limit in the future. Hopefully it will in essence clean up the active topics with more relevant threads to what the forum is really about... Chargers.

there certainly are people that did get post count crazy and that was their main goal in life. Thats agreed. However i think something could have been done about those 4-5 members as opposed to what happened. I dunno. It was quite obvious we didnt need 100 poho threads, but lets be serious about the politics too. forums are funded by advertisers and vendors. More activity on one site will bring more vendors and sponsors. If i owned my own company i'd much rather be on here with 18k in members and 400 average people on every minute of the day than somewhere with no activity, whether topic related or not. oh well , its said and done, next subject

As an owner of a small business that does 70% of it's business ($282k gross sales for last year) through the web and word of mouth (read forums) I can speak to that from experience.
RELEVANT traffic will draw advertisers, not junk threads. This forum has made the correct decision, both for their financial interests and the best interests of those who come here for information, not po-ho-ing.
I'd rather spend twice as much $ advertising on a 5000 hit a day forum with focused traffic than 1/2 as much on a 25,000 hit a day forum with general traffic.

If you've never had it done before, don't worry. I was terrified when I had one. I have this fear of anistesia (sp?). The nurse said to me "You're gonna love it. It's like a power nap."
She was absolutely right. I was upset when he said I didn't have to come back. It was the best 20 minutes sleep I ever had. I could hear things, but had no clue what was going on. Couldn't feel a thing.

My opinion as a member of the forum who knows a good handful of members outside of the forum, i would think the opposite. there are several people on here with limited car knowledge. they come on to talk to others and buy things for their cars. They dont venture into the other threads much because maybe doing the work themselves isnt something they tend to do. I know many members on here who are here for the comrodery (spelling??) more than anything, but all of them love chargers and buying things for them. People are still gonna look at the vendor sites and use them whether they leave off topic or not. They came here for the interest in the car and ended up making friendships along the way. They will look at your sites and then its up to your sites from that point on, but where they post and the manor they post i doubt has little to do with it. You saying a 18 year old who plays in off topic for 8 hours a day is less willing to buy a product from you then someone who spends 15 min in track talk each day? ? ?

I post ho, BUT, I advertise vendors, and have spent EASILY 3K with vendors since August. I aint loaded. Just a blue collar guy with a family income under 90K tryin to have a good time. I am not upset about the move. I would be MORE upset if mods enforced the no po ho rule. I think this was a fine compromise. I did for quite a while get caught up in the po ho post count madness. I healed some once it was cam time. My madness has abated to a degree. I am sure once my car is tuned, and I get used to the power, the moditis will kick in hard core again, and if I cant afford to mod, I will poho. Sorry

-Pat
I agree with most of what Pat said though some of the people who PoHo actually know a lot about Chargers and help out in the relevant threads (TBY for example).
I do not use the Active topic feature and go to the sections that interest me so I am not bothered by some of the meaningless posts since I just avoid those threads most of the time.
I think the General Charger Discussion section also can get out of hand sometimes with talk about other cars from people who come on here that do not even own Chargers. That is not as much as a problem now as it was say 6 months ago though. It also seems to be a catch all for topics that should go into other sections like asking about exterior related topics in there instead of the Exterior section of the forum.
I am not saying I have a problem with people that do not own a Charger being members but I do not think that they should post topics specifically about other cars in the General Charger area and should be directed to the Off-Topic section.

I'm very knowledgeable about these cars and I try to help out people when ever I can. In fact, in a lot of these so called "Poho Threads" We talk about our chargers a lot. So these threads aren't as pointless as many of you may think.
Most of the pohoing that occurs, happens very late at night when no one is on anyways. It's not all about post counts either. When you get off work at 2AM like I do and everyone is sleeping, you gotta do something to pass the time
I think this whole thing was blow way out of proportion, but if this is what the mods had to do to fix the "so called problem", then so be it. :smoke:

Most of my posts have something good to say not idle chatter.
I am only averaging 2.2 posts per day, which is not huge by any means.

Need to find a means of getting folks to search threads before they post as there are so many redundant threads. We're moving and/or closing them as we find them, but it's time-consuming and we have to ask everyone to be patient; it didn't build up to this overnight and won't be an overnight fix.

No thats what happens when you voice your opinion, even though your following the rules, someone else still changes what you wrote. You arent allowed to say what you think. Your no longer allowed to even stay within the rules without your posts being edited so why say anything in the first place?

I am obviously now low on cash, so I wanted to know where I could find some low budget/reliable mods. If anyone has had any great experiences with a specific vendor please share... I am open to anything.

wrong place to ask this bud but. . .
Check performance section for what mods are worth
check forum vendor feedback areas for each vendor to get answers from members about each specific one.
My opinion. I've had only two good experiences with forum vendors and neither company is a vendor anymore. All others I've had several issues with. Up to you to research for your particular thing though

We've already lost a few because of it, despite them saying it wouldn't matter if it counted or not. I guess it did. :(

Thanks, if you dont like it, then dont let the door hitya on the ass on the way out. Really, if you think its a POS, then go. But, if you want change, it certainly wont come about by calling the forums names.

My thoughts....I thought it was great that you changed things over to the "chat lounge" where no posts would count, also cleaned things up and deleted some stuff, Great!! Good job!!
What I see as crazy is now you are managing to the chat lounge and locking or deleting posts there because you say too many threads...WHAT, if people dont know how to select the thread types they only want to see then thats their issue, this forum allows for them to select what you want to see. The people who "chat" also buy from the vendors and contribute to other areas yet you limit them and control what they can do.
I just think your going a little overboard in managing the chat area.

I feel like the horse is dead stop beating it. I do agree that the mods should be more leanient (sp?) in the chat lounge but if they have to tighten up to get everyone up to where it should be then they will let more go later on. I just don't like that everyone is scared to BS like we used to at night, it was all that kept me awake sometimes when I was on watch late at night and now it is dead at night, very boring. But I guess I could find a random chat room somewhere to keep me occupied but there are less dumb#sses here.

C'mon metgo, that's not a real mature attitude, thought you were made of sterner stuff than that (dissapointed)

Why are you afraid to chat? There are still plenty of places to do that here! :)

LXchat is cool and all, but those LXforums guys.. we need one for us, even if it IS seperate. Maybe I can make an official chat, wonder how much it costs.
